Ernest Jones IV shines as NFC Defensive Player of the Week
Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV has made headlines with a remarkable performance, earning the title of NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 13. This accolade comes swiftly after his return from a knee injury that sidelined him for one game. In a commanding 26-0 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, Jones showcased his skills by amassing a team-high 12 tackles, two pass deflections, and two interceptions, one of which he impressively returned for a touchdown—the first of his NFL career.
A Historic Achievement for Seattle’s Defense
Jones’ accomplishment marks a significant moment in Seahawks history, as he becomes the first inside linebacker from Seattle to receive this honor since Bobby Wagner in 2020. The comparisons between Jones and the legendary Wagner are becoming increasingly common, with many noting Jones’ leadership qualities and his substantial impact on a defense that has shown considerable improvement this season.
Following the victory, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald praised Jones for his inspirational presence in the locker room. “He had such a great message to the team,” Macdonald remarked. “The guy has been through a lot; it’s just the position that we’re put in as coaches. That’s really the reason you have a team, is that you can be there for your brother when they need you.” The coach emphasized the importance of relationships within the team, highlighting the support Jones has received from his teammates.
A Dynamic Linebacker Duo
The Seahawks have finally established a potent linebacker duo, with Jones and Drake Thomas playing at an elite level after years of instability at the position. This was a key factor in Macdonald’s hiring, as he was recognized for his expertise in developing linebackers. Jones has already recorded 83 tackles, three tackles for loss, half a sack, seven pass deflections, and five interceptions this season, all achieved in just 10 games—having missed two due to his recent knee injury.
Currently, Jones is leading one of the best defenses the Seahawks have fielded in a decade. While he has big shoes to fill—Wagner led the franchise for 11 years, accumulating nine Pro Bowl selections and nine All-Pro honors, including six First Team nods—Jones is on a promising trajectory. Wagner remains Seattle’s all-time leading tackler and played a crucial role in securing the franchise’s only Super Bowl victory, earning his place as a top-5 player in the team’s history.
Jones is beginning to carve out his own legacy, and this season could very well be the foundation for a long and prosperous future with the Seahawks, as he continues to develop his skills and leadership on the field.
