Eagles set to rest starters with Tanner McKee stepping in against Commanders

The Philadelphia Eagles are making headlines as they prepare to rest several starters for their regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders. This strategic decision reflects the team’s focus on maintaining player health and readiness as they head into the postseason.

Roster Management and Game Day Strategy

While some players will be held out entirely, others are expected to see limited action. The Eagles must adhere to NFL roster regulations, which stipulate that a minimum number of players must dress for the game. Unlike preseason contests that can accommodate larger rosters, the Eagles will navigate this game with their 53-man roster and two practice-squad elevations, including long snapper Charley Hughlett.

Tanner McKee Takes the Spotlight

In a surprising twist, third-year quarterback Tanner McKee is set to make his second career start for the Eagles. McKee’s initial start came during Week 18 of the previous season when the team opted to rest many key players. In that outing, he showcased his potential by leading the Eagles to a 20-13 victory, completing 27 of 41 passes for 269 yards and throwing two touchdowns.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni spoke to McKee’s development as a quarterback, emphasizing his ability to read defenses and deliver accurate throws. “When you see Tanner, he’s really good about knowing where to go with the football,” Sirianni remarked, reflecting on the quarterback’s growth behind the scenes.

Support from a Talented Quarterback Room

Sirianni highlighted the importance of the supportive environment surrounding McKee since he joined the team as a sixth-round pick in 2023. “It’s a great quarterback room where those guys feed off each other and learn from each other,” he noted. The presence of established starter Jalen Hurts has been particularly beneficial for McKee, allowing him to absorb knowledge and skills from one of the league’s top talents.

The coaching staff, particularly quarterback coach Scot Loeffler, has played a pivotal role in McKee’s development. Sirianni acknowledged the contributions of previous coaches, including Doug Nussmeier, Kellen Moore, and Kevin Patullo, in shaping McKee’s journey. This collaborative effort has fostered an environment conducive to growth, further enhancing McKee’s readiness for the upcoming challenge.

Looking Ahead

As the Eagles gear up for their matchup against the Commanders, all eyes will be on Tanner McKee as he steps into the starting role. With a solid foundation of support and experience behind him, the young quarterback has the opportunity to showcase his skills on a significant stage. The team’s decision to rest starters indicates a commitment to long-term success, with McKee poised to make the most of this unexpected opportunity.
