Eagles navigate injury challenges ahead of Commanders clash
PHILADELPHIA – As snow blankets the practice fields at the NovaCare Complex, the Philadelphia Eagles opted for a change of scenery, holding Wednesday’s Week 16 practice at Lincoln Financial Field. However, not all players made the journey. Notably absent were offensive linemen Lane Johnson and Landon Dickerson, along with defensive tackle Jalen Carter. Fred Johnson, present at the field, remained sidelined on the home side’s bench while teammates participated in drills.
Quarterback’s Condition Improves
Jalen Hurts, the Eagles’ quarterback, was in attendance. He had expressed confidence a day earlier, stating he felt fine despite experiencing a slight limp during the previous Sunday’s game against the Raiders, where his left leg bent awkwardly. During the open portion of practice, Hurts demonstrated mobility, participating in drills without any visible discomfort. Running back Saquon Barkley also joined the practice session, though he was listed on Tuesday’s estimated report as not practicing due to a stinger. The team’s comprehensive practice report is expected later on Wednesday, which may indicate limited participation for Barkley and others.
Lane Johnson’s Ongoing Absence
The Eagles are preparing for a crucial matchup against the Washington Commanders this Saturday in Landover, Maryland, aiming to secure their second consecutive NFC East title. A victory would mark the first back-to-back titles in the division for the Eagles since they accomplished the feat 21 years ago. Conversely, a loss would necessitate the Cowboys to lose to the Chargers the following day for the Eagles to claim the division, or they would have to wait until the next week when they face the Bills in Buffalo.
Unfortunately, it appears that the Eagles will face the Commanders without Lane Johnson. The right tackle is set to miss his fifth consecutive game due to a Lisfranc injury. The team managed a win against the Raiders, marking their first victory since Johnson’s injury, with a decisive score of 31-0.
Backup Plans in Limbo
The status of Johnson’s backup, Fred Johnson, remains uncertain after he appeared on the injury report last week with an ankle injury sustained during practice. It’s possible this absence was merely a rest day, but if the situation worsens, the Eagles may rely on Matt Pryor, who took first-team reps at right tackle during Wednesday’s drills.
With Landon Dickerson unavailable due to a calf injury that has hampered him for the past two weeks, Brett Toth stepped in at left guard with the first team. The Eagles are experiencing a challenging stretch, playing their fifth game on a short week, a feat not seen since at least 2000, as noted by The Athletic’s Zach Berman. The mounting injuries could be taking a toll as they approach a critical juncture in their season.
