Eagles’ daring roster move stuns fans as key starters set to rest in crucial Week 18 showdown

Eagles shake up roster ahead of pivotal Week 18 matchup

The Philadelphia Eagles are making headlines as they approach the crucial Week 18 showdown against the Washington Commanders. General Manager Howie Roseman is not one to shy away from strategic roster moves, especially as the regular season draws to a close.

Roster changes for a strategic advantage

On Monday, Roseman released veteran long snapper Charley Hughlett, just a day after the Eagles secured a narrow 13-12 victory over the Buffalo Bills, improving their record to 11-5. This decision comes with inherent risks, particularly as all vested veterans must clear waivers at this stage of the season. However, the chances of another team claiming a 35-year-old long snapper for a single game appeared slim.

The move aligns with the Eagles’ plan to rest several key starters against the Commanders. Even with the possibility of clinching the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs—a scenario that would require both a victory over Washington and a Detroit win against Chicago—the Eagles seem inclined to prioritize player health over playoff positioning.

A calculated gamble

The decision to rest starters may stem from confidence in backup quarterback Tanner McKee, who is set to lead the team against a Commanders squad helmed by Josh Johnson. By doing so, the Eagles are essentially crafting a bye week for their most critical players, allowing them ample recovery time before the playoffs.

Despite the uncertainty of the Lions’ performance, which remains beyond the Eagles’ control, the team appears steadfast in its strategy.

Hughlett’s return to the fold

In a twist to the story, Hughlett successfully cleared waivers and is set to rejoin the Eagles as part of their practice squad, according to his agent Brett Tessler. He is expected to be one of two practice squad elevations for the upcoming game. To make room for him, the Eagles released edge defender Titus Leo from their practice squad on Tuesday.

As the Eagles prepare for their final regular-season game, all eyes will be on how these roster decisions impact their playoff aspirations and overall team dynamics.
