Dolphins Face Cornerback Depth Issues Against Jets
The Miami Dolphins are navigating a roster challenge as they prepare to face the New York Jets in Week 4. With a surprising decision regarding their inactive list, the Dolphins find themselves thin at cornerback on game day.
Inactives and Surprises
Typically, the Dolphins’ inactive roster consists of players who are either injured or not deemed ready for play. This week, however, Miami’s list is notably smaller due to the absence of any practice squad elevations. Among the five players declared inactive is cornerback Ethan Bonner, a decision that raises eyebrows considering the team’s current cornerback situation. This leaves the Dolphins with only four cornerbacks available on the game-day roster: Jack Jones, Rasul Douglas, Cornell Armstrong, and newcomer JuJu Brents. It’s worth mentioning that safety Elijah Campbell, known for his special teams prowess, has cornerback experience, adding some versatility.
The decision to forgo elevating cornerback Isaiah Johnson from the practice squad for added depth has raised questions among fans and analysts alike. The Dolphins are already feeling the strain in their secondary, with Storm Duck sidelined for another game due to an ankle injury, and Jason Marshall Jr. placed on injured reserve earlier this week with a hamstring issue.
In addition to Bonner, the inactives include wide receiver Tahj Washington and defensive tackle Zeek Biggers. Washington has yet to see game action this season, while Biggers has made a single appearance when Benito Jones was unavailable in Week 2.
Jets’ Inactive Roster
On the other side of the field, the New York Jets have their own challenges with injuries impacting their lineup. Key players ruled out include edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II, cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr., and running back Kene Nwangwu, who was downgraded from doubtful just before the game. Also among the Jets’ inactives are wide receiver Tyler Johnson, tackle Esa Pole, tight end Jelani Woods, and defensive lineman Leonard Taylor III, a former University of Miami standout.
As both teams face their respective challenges, the Dolphins’ decision-making at cornerback could prove critical in their matchup against the Jets. With a limited roster and injury concerns, Miami’s strategy on defense will be under scrutiny as they aim to secure a win at Hard Rock Stadium.
