Dolphins poised for resurgence with dynamic run game, favorable schedule, and revitalized pass rush to defy 0-3 start

Dolphins Positioned for Turnaround Amidst Early Struggles

The Miami Dolphins find themselves in a precarious position, starting the season with an 0-3 record that casts a long shadow over their playoff aspirations. While the odds of reaching the postseason are slim, they are not entirely extinguished. As the team looks to turn the tide, several factors could contribute to a resurgence in their performance.

Revitalized Running Game Sparks Hope

Despite the struggles of the Dolphins’ offense this season, there are signs of life, particularly in the running game. In the recent loss to the Buffalo Bills, Miami showcased a more effective ground attack, accumulating 130 yards on 25 carries, averaging an impressive 5.2 yards per rush. This performance followed a solid showing in Week 1, where they recorded 78 yards on just 12 carries for an average of 6.5 yards per rush.

The dynamic duo of rookie De’Von Achane and Ollie Gordon II presents a compelling combination for the Dolphins. Achane’s speed complements Gordon’s power, allowing the team to diversify its running strategy. Gordon’s ability to break tackles and excel in short-yardage situations has added a necessary dimension to the offense.

In addition, the offensive line is currently more adept at run blocking than pass protection. The left side, with Patrick Paul and Jonah Savaiinaea, provides a formidable presence, while Aaron Brewer’s agility in space enhances their run game. This newfound effectiveness on the ground could serve as a foundation for the Dolphins as they seek to regain their footing.

Favorable Schedule Offers Opportunities

As the Dolphins look ahead, their schedule presents several opportunities that could pave the way for a turnaround. This week, they face the 0-3 New York Jets, followed by encounters with the 1-2 Carolina Panthers and the 1-2 Cleveland Browns. Although the latter two teams secured victories in Week 3, these matchups remain winnable for Miami.

The Dolphins will then take on the Los Angeles Chargers, currently 3-0, but set to travel cross-country for an early game—an endeavor that often challenges West Coast teams. Following that, they will meet the Atlanta Falcons, who recently struggled against the Panthers.

If Miami can capitalize on these upcoming matchups, there is a plausible scenario where they could win four out of their next five games, potentially bringing their record to 4-4. This would set them up for a challenging three-game stretch against the Ravens, Commanders, and Bills, where they would need to secure at least one victory to maintain playoff hopes.

After a bye week, Miami’s toughest remaining contests appear to be against the Buccaneers and Steelers, with the possibility of facing a Bengals team that may still be without their star quarterback, Joe Burrow. While challenging, if the Dolphins can assert themselves against teams they are favored to beat and steal a couple of surprise wins, they can remain in the wild-card race.

Defensive Line Poised for Improvement

On the defensive side, the Dolphins are expected to see some positive regression from their pass rushers, who have thus far underperformed. Bradley Chubb has recorded three sacks but carries a pressure rate of just 6.9%. Conversely, Jaelan Phillips boasts a 17.3% pressure rate but has yet to register a sack. As the season progresses, Phillips is likely to find success in getting to the quarterback, while Chubb should become more consistent as he shakes off the rust from his recovery.

The potential for improvement also extends to Zach Sieler and Chop Robinson. Sieler has struggled significantly, with a pressure rate that has plummeted to 2.6%, down from his typical performance. Robinson’s situation mirrors this, as his pressure rate stands at a mere 2.9%, a stark contrast to his 17.2% from last season.

While it may be tempting to label Miami’s defensive front as underwhelming, the talent remains. With a few adjustments and a return to form, they can become a formidable force, aiding the team in their quest for redemption.

As the Dolphins prepare for their next challenge, the combination of a revitalized run game, a favorable schedule, and the anticipation of improved defensive performance offers a glimmer of hope for a turnaround in what has been a rocky start to the season.
