Dolphins Elevate Practice Squad Duo Ahead of Colts Clash
The Miami Dolphins have finalized their roster adjustments in preparation for their Week 1 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. As expected, the team has elevated two players from their practice squad, with no surprises in sight. However, there remains uncertainty regarding the tight end position as kickoff approaches.
Practice Squad Elevations
On Saturday, the Dolphins elevated kicker Riley Patterson and veteran running back Jeff Wilson Jr. from their practice squad. The move to promote Patterson was a foregone conclusion, as the team found themselves without an active kicker following Jason Sanders’ placement on injured reserve. This elevation marks the first of three that Patterson can receive this season, after which the Dolphins must make a strategic decision regarding his future with the team.
Wilson’s promotion was necessitated by an injury to second-year running back Jaylen Wright, leaving Miami with only two healthy options at the position for the upcoming game. Wilson’s familiarity with the team, having been with the Dolphins last season, made his selection over fellow practice squad member JaMycal Hasty a logical choice.
Tight End Situation Uncertain
The most pressing question for the Dolphins centers on their tight end situation. Following the recent practice squad elevations, the team has only two tight ends available for the game against Indianapolis, especially after Darren Waller was ruled out due to a hip injury. The active tight ends, Julian Hill and Tanner Conner, face an uphill battle as the Dolphins may need to make additional roster moves before the 4 p.m. deadline on Saturday.
There is speculation that the Dolphins could look to add another tight end from their 53-man roster, potentially bringing in Hayden Rucci or newcomer Greg Dulcich. However, making such a move would necessitate creating a roster spot, which could involve placing a player on injured reserve or waiving someone currently on the team.
Should the Dolphins proceed with just Hill and Conner, it would likely lead to increased responsibilities for fullback Alec Ingold and a reduction in two-tight end formations during the game against the Colts. Notably, Hill has been on the injury report throughout the week with a shoulder issue, although he was a full participant in all three practices leading up to the game.
As the Dolphins finalize their roster decisions, all eyes will be on how they adapt to injuries and make the most of their available talent as they prepare to take on the Colts.
