Dolphins brace for Patriots clash with offensive line in flux as Austin Jackson’s status remains uncertain

Dolphins prepare for Patriots matchup amid offensive line turmoil

The Miami Dolphins are gearing up for a crucial Week 2 showdown against the New England Patriots, but uncertainty looms over the offensive line. Coach Mike McDaniel is anticipating the absence of starting right tackle Austin Jackson, who left the previous game with a toe injury.

Injury Update on Austin Jackson

Jackson exited the Dolphins’ recent loss to the Colts late in the fourth quarter due to the injury. His status has been a point of concern, especially considering he missed significant time during the preseason with a similar issue. While it remains unclear if this is the same injury, McDaniel is proceeding as if Larry Borom will step in as the starter at right tackle.

“I can’t in good confidence make a determination on Austin Jackson yet,” McDaniel said, emphasizing the unpredictability of injuries. “But, I’ll say Larry is what I’m planning to do, but I will adjust if needed.”

Fortunately for the Dolphins, McDaniel indicated that he does not believe Jackson’s toe is broken, which suggests the team might have dodged a major injury bullet. However, until further updates are provided, the coaching staff remains cautious.

Offensive Line Challenges

Jackson is not the only concern for the Dolphins’ offensive line. Starting right guard James Daniels has been placed on injured reserve due to a pectoral injury and is expected to miss at least four weeks. McDaniel mentioned that Daniels could return around October 12 when they face the Los Angeles Chargers.

In response to Daniels’ injury, Miami has signed former Patriots first-round pick Cole Strange off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. Despite facing New England this week, McDaniel noted that Strange was brought in for his abilities rather than for insider information. “He’s here because of his own merit, and we’re excited to have him,” McDaniel commented, highlighting Strange’s skill set, which includes quickness and the ability to block effectively.

Adjustments on the Offensive Line

With Jackson and Daniels both sidelined, Borom is expected to occupy the right tackle position, while Kion Smith will likely fill in at right guard. Smith stepped up when Daniels was injured during the game against the Colts, though his performance was underwhelming. It’s worth noting that Smith is a converted tackle who had only seen 70 NFL snaps prior to this season.

The Dolphins also have the option of deploying Daniel Brunskill at guard, who brings more experience and familiarity with the system. The ongoing injury struggles have led to significant shuffling along the offensive line, raising questions about the team’s depth and effectiveness in protecting the quarterback.

As the Dolphins prepare for their clash with the Patriots, the reshuffling of the offensive line underscores the challenges that McDaniel and his team face. With the injuries piling up, Miami’s ability to adapt will be crucial as they seek to secure their first win of the season.
