Detroit Lions Trade Buzz: Could Brandin Cooks Reunite with Jared Goff for an Offensive Spark?

The Detroit Lions are on the prowl as the trade deadline approaches, eyeing potential reinforcements to enhance their offense. Under the guidance of new offensive coordinator John Morton, the Lions have shown promise, yet they’ve stumbled in key matchups against the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs. In both contests, the team fell short of its offensive goals, leading to double-digit defeats. With red zone inefficiencies and struggles to maintain drives, the Lions are searching for an injection of talent that could elevate them into one of the league’s premier scoring units.

Quarterback Options

While a quarterback acquisition seems unlikely given the recent developments, speculation lingers around a potential deal for Russell Wilson of the New York Giants. Wilson, a Super Bowl champion, may not be the player he once was, yet he stands out as a superior choice compared to other available options. With Kyle Allen securing the starting role in New York and Anthony Richardson still a developing prospect, the Lions could benefit from Wilson’s experience, especially as they navigate their own quarterback landscape.

Running Back Prospects

Tony Pollard of the Tennessee Titans has emerged as an intriguing candidate in the backfield. Pollard is enjoying a career year, and while Tennessee might hesitate to part ways with him, the absence of guaranteed money in his contract could make a trade appealing for both sides. The Titans may want to wait until Tyjae Spears returns from injury to assess their running game before making any decisions.

Tight End Considerations

The tight end position appears stable for Detroit, with Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright both poised for breakout seasons. However, if the Lions find a deal that aligns with their needs, Jeremy Ruckert of the New York Jets could be a worthwhile acquisition. Ruckert, in the final year of his rookie deal, presents a low-risk option that could provide depth should the need arise.

The Case for Brandin Cooks

One of the more enticing names on the trading block is Brandin Cooks, currently with the New Orleans Saints. Despite not overlapping directly with head coach Dan Campbell during his time in New Orleans, his familiarity with the organization is a plus. A potential reunion with Jared Goff looms large, given their previous connection during Cooks’ time with the Los Angeles Rams.

Cooks’ contract, with under $2 million guaranteed for 2026, positions him as a viable candidate for a trade, especially amid New Orleans’ recent struggles. Although his production has dipped in recent seasons, Cooks is not far removed from a season where he scored eight touchdowns, indicating he could still be a valuable asset if paired with Goff once again.

Bolstering the Offensive Line

The Lions’ offensive line has seen its share of challenges, particularly with injuries affecting key players. Dillon Radunz, also from the Saints, could provide depth and versatility. With experience playing both tackle and guard, Radunz could be a strategic addition, though the Lions might opt to remain patient as they develop their younger players.

Tackle Support

On the tackle front, the Lions have two outstanding players in Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell. However, Decker’s ongoing shoulder issues and the recent injury to backup Giovanni Manu raise concerns. Chukwuma Okorafor from the Jets could serve as a crucial insurance policy. As a swing tackle on a one-year deal, Okorafor could bolster the Lions’ offensive line if Decker’s situation worsens, providing necessary stability in a key position.

As the deadline looms, the Lions are weighing their options carefully. Will they make a move to bolster their offense, and could Brandin Cooks be part of the plan to reignite their scoring potential? The next few days will be pivotal in determining the direction of the Lions’ season.
