Detroit Lions shake up roster: Zylstra out, Rice released, Colon added

The Detroit Lions made significant changes to their roster ahead of their Week 3 showdown against the Baltimore Ravens, marking a strategic response to recent challenges.

Injury sidelines Zylstra

Tight end Shane Zylstra, who had been a reliable contributor, suffered an ankle injury during the game against the Chicago Bears and was unable to return. The Lions have now placed Zylstra on the Reserve/Injured list, effectively sidelining him for at least the next four games. His absence will be felt, especially given his blocking skills that were instrumental in the team’s offensive schemes since he secured a spot on the roster coming out of training camp.

Changes in the linebacker corps

In a move that reflects the team’s shifting priorities, the Lions also released linebacker Monty Rice from the practice squad. Rice faced difficulties in his debut with the Lions, including an untimely penalty that marred his performance and contributed to his dismissal from the team. This decision underscores the Lions’ commitment to maintaining high standards and performance, especially as they navigate the rigors of the season.

New faces in the lineup

To bolster their offensive line, the Lions signed Trystan Colon from the practice squad to the active roster. This addition aims to enhance depth and support for the team’s blocking schemes, particularly in light of Zylstra’s injury.

Meanwhile, the Lions continue to strengthen their practice squad by adding wide receiver Malik Cunningham and tight end Ross Dwelley. Dwelley, who was initially signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of the University of San Diego, brings valuable experience. In his college career, he recorded 197 receptions for 2,305 yards and 26 touchdowns. Last season, with the Falcons, he participated in 17 games and was particularly effective in two-tight-end sets, demonstrating both his blocking capabilities and familiarity with complex offensive schemes.

Summary of roster moves

The Lions’ recent roster moves are as follows:

Released LB Monty Rice from the practice squad
Placed TE Shane Zylstra on Reserve/Injured
Signed OL Trystan Colon to the active roster from the practice squad
Added WR Malik Cunningham and TE Ross Dwelley to the practice squad

These strategic adjustments reflect the Lions’ proactive approach as they prepare for their next challenge, looking to solidify their roster while navigating injuries and performance issues.
