Lions Hit with Nearly $29,000 in Fines as Campbell and Williams Face the Music
The Detroit Lions are feeling the sting of penalties following their Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Linebacker Jack Campbell and wide receiver Jameson Williams both found themselves on the wrong end of the NFL’s disciplinary measures, leading to fines totaling $28,982.
Jack Campbell’s Facemask Incident
Jack Campbell, the Lions’ promising linebacker and former first-round pick, was fined $11,593 for a facemask penalty committed in the third quarter of the game. The infraction occurred when Campbell grabbed the mask of Packers tight end Josh Whyle, an action that did not sit well with the league’s officiating crew.
Jameson Williams’ Taunting Fine
Meanwhile, Jameson Williams faced a heftier penalty of $17,389 for taunting during the fourth quarter. This isn’t the first time the former Alabama standout has been penalized for similar behavior; earlier in the season, Williams drew a fine for taunting Packers safety Xavier McKinney in their Week 1 clash at Lambeau Field.
Despite these setbacks, Williams has been on an upward trajectory in terms of performance. Since the Lions’ bye week, he has amassed 417 receiving yards, showcasing his growth on the field. In a notable performance against the Dallas Cowboys, Williams caught seven passes for 96 yards, signaling his increasing importance to the team.
Head Coach’s Praise for Williams
Lions head coach Dan Campbell has taken notice of Williams’ development, praising his growth and confidence. “High confidence. High confidence. He’s really growing. I mean, he just continues to grow and get better. He’s fearless,” Campbell remarked. He emphasized how Williams has refined his route-running skills, making him a challenging cover for opposing defenses.
“His confidence is growing, our confidence is growing, and he’s doing well. You should’ve seen him running yesterday. I mean, this guy, he works now. He works in practice every day. So, love where he’s at,” he added.
Increased Trust from Goff
Quarterback Jared Goff’s trust in Williams has also been evident as the season progresses. Following a lucrative contract extension earlier this year, expectations for a breakout season have been high. Goff noted, “He’s becoming that player we always knew he could be over the course of the season. He’s as reliable of a guy as I’ve ever played with at this point.”
Goff appreciates Williams’ energy and confidence, highlighting his ability to perform in critical situations. “Third down, fourth down, don’t matter. He’ll make the play. He’ll show up. He’s an energy guy. He’s a juice guy.”
Supporting Cast Strengthens
Adding to Goff’s arsenal is Amon-Ra St. Brown, who remained active against the Cowboys, providing yet another reliable target. Additionally, rookie Isaac TeSlaa has seen an uptick in playing time, further bolstering the Lions’ receiving corps as they push through the latter part of the season.
As the Lions navigate the challenges of fines and penalties, the focus will be on maintaining momentum and continuing to improve their game as they aim for success in the weeks ahead.
