Detroit Lions RB Dilemma: Montgomery or Gibbs for the First Series Against the Buccaneers

As the Detroit Lions gear up for their showdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, one of the key questions looming over the team is who will take the first series as running back: David Montgomery or Jahmyr Gibbs? With the Lions looking to regain their footing on the ground, the decision could prove pivotal in setting the tone for the game.

Injury Concerns and Secondary Needs

The Lions have been grappling with injuries in their secondary, raising concerns about depth as they prepare for the Buccaneers. Christian Booher suggests that adding a veteran presence to the secondary would be beneficial, especially given the number of players sidelined. With injuries affecting key players, the Lions face challenges defending against Baker Mayfield and the Tampa offense.

Booher notes, “The bye week should be a big help for the Lions after this week, as it will allow some players to heal up.” Vito Chirco echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the need for the secondary to avoid further injuries. With both starting safeties, Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, out, the defensive backfield is under pressure to perform.

Key Players to Watch

As the Lions look to bolster their defensive efforts, the spotlight will be on players stepping up in the absence of regular starters. Booher identifies Amik Robertson and Thomas Harper as potential impact players, while Chirco highlights the importance of the linebacking trio of Derrick Barnes, Jack Campbell, and Alex Anzalone. Each member of this group has contributed significantly this season, with Campbell earning high grades from Pro Football Focus.

Chirco remarks, “I think this trio of linebackers will come through with a solid effort against Mayfield and the Buccaneers.” Their performance will be crucial as the Lions aim to contain Tampa Bay’s offense.

The RB Debate: Montgomery vs. Gibbs

When it comes to the running back position, the debate centers on who should lead off against the Buccaneers. Booher favors Gibbs for his explosive skill set, believing he has the potential to deliver a big gain early in the game. “The talented running back has a more explosive skill set and gives the Lions a better chance of breaking a big gain early,” he argues.

Conversely, Chirco leans toward Montgomery, citing his experience and the Lions’ desire to establish a strong running game. “I think John Morton will try to get the veteran back going early and often against the Buccaneers,” he states, suggesting that Montgomery’s track record may earn him the starting nod for the first series.

Alim McNeill’s Season Debut Expectations

Another storyline to watch is the debut of Alim McNeill, who is expected to have a limited role as the Lions manage his workload. Booher anticipates that McNeill will see around 20-25 snaps, with a more significant role anticipated after the bye week. Chirco concurs, noting that while McNeill could be productive, the team is likely to ease him into action, saving more substantial contributions for future games.

As the Lions prepare for this crucial matchup, decisions surrounding the running back rotation and defensive adjustments will play a significant role in their quest for victory against Tampa Bay. The outcome of these choices could set the stage for the remainder of the season as Detroit aims to solidify its standing in the competitive NFC.
