Lions Reflect on Missed Opportunity as Kobie Turner Shines for Rams
The Detroit Lions find themselves grappling with a missed opportunity in the NFL Draft, as former defensive end Kobie Turner has emerged as a standout player for the Los Angeles Rams. Selected by Rams general manager Les Snead with the 89th overall pick in the 2023 draft, Turner has quickly made a name for himself in the league.
A Draft Decision Under Scrutiny
In the wake of the Rams’ narrow 38-37 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks, T.J. Lang, a former Lions offensive lineman and current sideline reporter, took to social media to highlight the decision that has haunted the Lions. He pointed out that Turner was picked 21 spots after Detroit chose quarterback Hendon Hooker with the 68th selection. Lang emphasized that his comments were not meant as a critique of Lions general manager Brad Holmes. Instead, he noted, “That’s not a shot at Brad. Every team let Turner fall to the bottom of the 3rd. Happens every year.”
Unfortunately for the Lions, Hooker has struggled to find his footing in the league, currently bouncing around and recently signing with the New York Jets’ practice squad, where he reunites with former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.
Turner Shines Against Detroit
Against the Lions, Turner showcased his burgeoning talent, recording one sack and five total tackles. Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula praised his performance, stating, “In the second half, I think our guys just made plays and executed. That’s really all it was. It wasn’t anything crazy that we did scheme-wise.” He acknowledged the challenges posed by the Lions in the first half but credited his players for stepping up when it mattered most.
Shula further highlighted Turner’s prowess as a defensive end, saying, “He’s a stud. You saw that one, obviously that huge sack on the… I think it was a second-and-10 and he just closes. He’s a finisher.” His consistent ability to disrupt plays and finish tackles has earned Turner a reputation as a game-wrecker.
A Rising Star in the Making
Turner’s performance has not gone unnoticed. Shula remarked on his reliability, stating, “It’s like one of those guys, we say it all the time, he doesn’t have a lot of bad plays, very few bad plays. He’s consistent.” He emphasized the need for opponents to account for Turner, noting, “If you settle up a little bit, then he’s going to beat you. If he gets a chance, he’s going to finish.”
As the Lions reflect on their draft choices, the contrast between Turner’s rapid ascent and Hooker’s struggles serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of the NFL Draft and the impact of player development in the league. The missed chance to secure a talent like Turner could linger in the minds of Lions fans for years to come.
