Detroit Lions defensive coordinator slams Terrion Arnold’s ‘unacceptable’ run defense, demands immediate improvement

Lions Defensive Coordinator Demands Improvement from Terrion Arnold in Run Defense

The Detroit Lions are looking for significant improvement from cornerback Terrion Arnold, particularly in his run defense. Arnold, a second-year player, recently showcased his potential by recording his first career interception during a tough home loss against the Minnesota Vikings. However, despite this progress, the Lions’ defensive coordinator, Kelvin Sheppard, expressed dissatisfaction with Arnold’s performance in run support.

Growth and Development Acknowledged

During a media session leading up to Thursday’s practice, Sheppard spoke about Arnold’s development, saying, “I absolutely see growth with the player in Terrion, absolutely. In pass coverage, it’s been outstanding.” He credited both Arnold’s efforts and the guidance of the Lions’ passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, Deshea Townsend, for the cornerback’s improvement in certain areas.

Despite these positive strides, Sheppard pointed out a critical aspect of Arnold’s game that requires immediate attention. “The part of TA’s game I need to see improve is the run game and run support. It’s unacceptable right now, and he knows that,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded skill set for defensive backs.

Defensive Identity and Expectations

Sheppard drew on lessons learned from former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn regarding the essence of a tough defense. He articulated, “The identity of your defense shows up when your corner’s at the point of attack in the run game.” For Sheppard, demonstrating physicality in run support is non-negotiable for any player wishing to earn a place on the field. “We don’t believe in cover guys. Our identity as a defense is tough, physical, violent mentality, and that has to show up in all aspects of the game,” he added.

Technique Over Will

What gives Sheppard confidence in Arnold’s ability to improve is the belief that the issues at hand stem more from technique rather than effort. “To me, it’s a technique issue, because he’s there at the point of attack,” he remarked. Sheppard noted that Arnold’s willingness to succeed is evident, saying, “I know Terrion wants to do it; it’s not a will or anything like that.”

Sheppard stressed the necessity for players to maintain proper technique, particularly when facing the high-caliber athletes in the league. “You have to bring your feet, that’s everybody,” he explained, referencing play from other team members like linebacker Alex Anzalone. The message was clear: dropping to one’s knees or lunging at opponents is not acceptable. “The players in this League are too good nowadays to break down the shuffle and all that,” he cautioned.

A Call to Action

As the Lions prepare for their upcoming challenges, Sheppard’s comments serve as a clarion call for Arnold and the entire defense. To embody the team’s identity, the players must rise to the occasion, showcasing their toughness and physicality in every aspect of the game. The expectation is clear: if the Lions are to succeed, they need all their players, including Arnold, to step up and meet the demands of modern NFL defense.
