Desmond Ridder returns to Vikings after Falcons’ disastrous QB gamble with Kirk Cousins

Date:

Desmond Ridder’s Journey: From Atlanta to Minnesota

The Atlanta Falcons made a bold move in the 2022 NFL Draft when they selected Desmond Ridder in the third round, naming him the starting quarterback for the 2023 season. This decision, however, spiraled into a series of misfortunes that ultimately cost head coach Arthur Smith his position. After finishing the season with a disappointing 7-10 record for the third consecutive year, Smith opted to bench Ridder twice, a sign of the struggles that plagued the young quarterback throughout the season.

A Disrupted Season and Coaching Changes

The culmination of the Falcons’ struggles came in a disheartening loss to the New Orleans Saints, leading to Smith’s dismissal. In an effort to rebuild, the Falcons signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins in the spring of 2024, marking a significant shift in their strategy. Just days after Cousins joined the team, Ridder was traded to the Arizona Cardinals, a move that underscored the Falcons’ desire to reset their quarterback situation.

Since the trade, Ridder has faced challenges in securing a stable role with the Cardinals. However, recent reports indicate a new opportunity for him as he has been signed to the practice squad of the Minnesota Vikings, Cousins’ former team. This development adds an intriguing twist to Ridder’s career trajectory and the ongoing quarterback saga in the NFL.

Irony of the Quarterback Shuffle

The irony of Ridder moving to the Vikings is not lost on fans of the Falcons. Ridder, once embraced as the future by Smith, was ultimately deemed insufficient and sent packing. Meanwhile, Cousins, who was the starting quarterback for Minnesota during Ridder’s draft year, departed for Atlanta after the Vikings signaled their intent to draft his eventual replacement.

The Falcons’ willingness to offer Cousins a guaranteed second year in free agency played a pivotal role in shaping the quarterback landscape. Shortly after securing Cousins with a lucrative two-year, $100 million contract, the Vikings drafted Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick, while Ridder’s former team selected J.J. McCarthy at No. 10.

Vikings’ Current Situation

The Vikings find themselves in a transitional phase, especially with McCarthy currently in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Ridder’s signing may provide necessary depth at the quarterback position as the team navigates this challenging period.

The only move that has seemingly worked well for both franchises in recent times is the Vikings’ acquisition of Sam Darnold as a veteran bridge quarterback. Darnold performed admirably for Minnesota last season, leading to a new contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Meanwhile, McCarthy has faced his own hurdles, missing the entirety of last season due to injury and struggling with both ineffectiveness and ongoing health concerns.

This latest chapter in Ridder’s career not only highlights the unpredictable nature of the NFL but also serves as a reminder of the intricate connections between teams and their quarterback decisions. The coming weeks will reveal what lies ahead for Ridder and the evolving dynamics of the Falcons and Vikings.
