Deshaun Watson’s shock return looms as Browns’ QB chaos spirals out of control

Browns Face Dilemma with Watson’s Return Amid QB Turmoil

The Cleveland Browns find themselves at a crossroads they hoped to dodge this season: the potential return of Deshaun Watson to game action. Recently, the team announced the opening of Watson’s 21-day practice window after he spent the entire season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Watson’s absence has been a result of a torn Achilles injury sustained last year, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season after just seven games.

Quarterback Carousel

Throughout this season, the Browns have cycled through three quarterbacks: Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders. The performances of this trio have been less than inspiring, leading to a chaotic situation under center. With the team struggling to find stability, the prospect of activating Watson becomes increasingly relevant.

In assessing Watson’s time in Cleveland, the numbers tell a stark story. Over his four seasons with the team, he has posted a 9-10 record as a starter, completing only 61% of his passes for a total of 3,365 yards, accompanied by 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. While these statistics are far from stellar, they prompt a question: could a return to the field offer a glimmer of hope?

A Glimmer of Hope?

Watson’s past performances with the Houston Texans showcased his undeniable talent, earning him three Pro Bowl selections. The Browns’ current quarterback situation has been dismal, as Flacco, Gabriel, and Sanders collectively struggle with completion percentages below 60% and a combined record of 3-9 as starters. The team’s frustration reached a peak when Flacco was traded away after failing to deliver results.

Cleveland’s decision to grant Watson a fully guaranteed contract worth $230 million has come under scrutiny. With one more year remaining on that deal, the Browns face a pivotal choice: put Watson back on the field and assess whether he can still contribute meaningfully. Given the substantial financial commitment made to him, it may be worth exploring any remaining potential before his contract expires in 2026.

Protecting the Future

With the offensive line suffering from injuries, the Browns must also consider the ramifications of fielding a rookie like Sanders, especially after Gabriel faced a concussion. Protecting their young quarterback while evaluating Watson could be a strategic move. As the team weighs its options, there are emerging signs of promise from Sanders, but the urgency to stabilize the position remains paramount.

While Watson’s past off-field issues and underwhelming performances have drawn considerable criticism, the Browns’ significant investment in him compels them to explore all avenues. As they navigate this quarterback turmoil, the looming question remains: can Deshaun Watson reclaim his former brilliance, or is it time for Cleveland to move on?
