Derrick Henry’s ball security woes threaten Ravens’ Super Bowl dreams as showdown with Chiefs looms

Derrick Henry’s Ball Security Issues Cast Shadow on Ravens’ Super Bowl Aspirations

Derrick Henry’s struggles with ball security this season have raised significant concerns for the Baltimore Ravens as they prepare for a crucial matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. If not for Henry’s fumbles in Weeks 1 and 3, the Ravens could easily be sporting a perfect 3-0 record. While his fumble in Week 2 did not hinder the team’s dominant victory over the Cleveland Browns, the trend is alarming—especially considering that Henry has historically been one of the most reliable ball carriers in the NFL.

Alarming Statistics

In the last two seasons, Henry fumbled the ball on only 0.46% of his carries. However, this season, that rate has skyrocketed to a staggering 6.9%. Such a drastic shift poses a serious threat to the Ravens’ offensive stability and their Super Bowl ambitions.

Expert Analysis on Ball Security

Long-time NFL defensive back Devin McCourty provided insight into Henry’s fumbling woes, remarking on a specific play in which Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was able to punch the ball out. According to McCourty, Henry’s elbow position was too low, making it easier for defenders to dislodge the football. He emphasized that for Henry to protect the ball effectively, he needs to carry it higher and tighter when faced with oncoming defenders.

A Frustrated King Henry

Following the fumble on Monday night, Henry’s frustration was palpable. He was visibly upset, nearly throwing himself onto the bench in disappointment. This emotional response highlights how much he understands the weight of his mistakes—not just for himself, but for the team as a whole.

Ravens’ Dilemma

Although the Ravens are undoubtedly concerned about these ball security issues, they find themselves in a tough position. Derrick Henry is not just any running back; he is one of the best in NFL history and has continually defied the effects of aging with his performance on the field. The Ravens cannot simply bench him or turn away from his talents.

Looking Ahead to Week 4

The stakes are high as the Ravens prepare to face the 1-2 Chiefs in Week 4. This matchup is critical, as one of these two preseason Super Bowl favorites will leave the field with a disappointing 1-3 record. For the Ravens to have a fighting chance to defeat Kansas City, they need Derrick Henry to regain his grip—literally—on the football.

As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Henry as he works to correct these issues. The Ravens’ Super Bowl dreams may very well hinge on his ability to secure the ball moving forward.
