Derrick Henry delivers historic performance in Ravens’ crucial win
Derrick Henry faced considerable scrutiny following the Baltimore Ravens’ Week 16 loss to the New England Patriots, where many criticized the team’s failure to utilize the future Hall of Fame running back effectively in the game’s closing moments. This prompted a substantial shift in strategy as the Ravens took on the Green Bay Packers in Week 17.
A Bounce-Back Game
In response to the recent backlash, Henry took it upon himself to lead the Ravens to a much-needed victory. The five-time Pro Bowler had a solid outing in the previous week, amassing 128 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. However, what followed against the Packers was nothing short of remarkable. Henry exploded for a staggering 216 yards and four touchdowns on a career-high 36 carries, propelling the Ravens to a decisive 41-24 victory that kept their playoff aspirations alive.
“I was just worried about being effective with any opportunity that I got and being efficient in the run game,” Henry reflected on his mindset heading into the game. “I just wanted to go out there and make something happen.” His focus on dominating the line of scrimmage and establishing the Ravens’ run game set the tone for the night.
Historic Milestones Achieved
The night was particularly significant for Henry, especially as he filled the void left by two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was sidelined for the fourth time this season. In the first half alone, he surpassed the legendary Tony Dorsett for the 10th-most rushing yards in NFL history and Adrian Peterson for the fourth-most rushing touchdowns. By the final whistle, Henry had further solidified his place in history, marking his seventh career game with over 200 rushing yards—a feat that now holds the NFL record.
This performance was only the second time in Henry’s career that he eclipsed the 200-yard mark while scoring four or more touchdowns, a feat he last achieved back in Week 14 of the 2018 season with the Tennessee Titans. He joins an elite group, becoming just the second player in NFL history to accomplish this remarkable feat, alongside Hall of Famer Jim Brown. Additionally, he matched the great LaDainian Tomlinson for the most games with over 100 rushing yards and two or more touchdowns.
Henry’s explosive performance not only showcased his immense talent but also reaffirmed his status as one of the league’s premier running backs, even in the absence of his star quarterback. As the Ravens look ahead, his ability to dominate on the ground will be crucial as they pursue their playoff dreams.
