Denver Broncos shock with fullback Adam Prentice’s explosive 18-yard run in Raiders victory

Broncos Fullback Adam Prentice Shines with Key 18-Yard Run Against Raiders

In a surprising turn during the Denver Broncos’ 24-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, it was not the star quarterback Bo Nix or standout running back RJ Harvey who delivered the longest rushing play of the game. Instead, it was the unassuming fullback Adam Prentice who electrified the crowd with an explosive 18-yard run up the middle. This pivotal play occurred midway through the third quarter as part of a lengthy 14-play, 91-yard drive, ultimately setting the stage for Harvey’s short scoring run.

Coach Payton Highlights Prentice’s Contribution

After the game, Broncos head coach Sean Payton took a moment to acknowledge Prentice’s contributions with a touch of humor. He playfully questioned a reporter, asking if they missed the impressive “belly play” while grabbing a hot dog. Payton, familiar with Prentice from their time together in New Orleans, emphasized the underappreciated talent of the former undrafted free agent. In addition to his 18-yard burst, Prentice logged a total of 22 rushing yards on two carries and added 11 receiving yards from two catches against the Raiders.

“Listen, he had a really good game today because there’s some contact inline with he and the linebackers. And the one thing about him is you know exactly what you’re getting,” Payton remarked. “You’re never fooled. His run fits, his blocking fits, all those things for a fullback—I’m sure when we look at the film, he played well.”

Prentice’s Journey to the Broncos

Prentice, who stands at 6-foot and weighs 245 pounds, originally joined the Broncos following the 2021 NFL Draft but was waived during final cuts. He later found a role with the New Orleans Saints, where he played for four seasons and made 13 starts. This August, after the Broncos suffered injuries to veteran fullback Michael Burton and reserve tight end Nate Adkins, Prentice rejoined the team. Promoted from the practice squad in September, he has since been a consistent presence in all 12 regular-season games for Denver.

Currently, Prentice ranks as Pro Football Focus’s fourth-highest-rated fullback among nine qualifiers. His performance is a testament to the value of a position that is often overlooked, yet remains essential to the team’s offensive scheme.

Versatile Role in the Offense

Payton has praised Prentice for his versatility, particularly in sub-protection roles. “He’s really good, and he’s heavy. He’s good at protection,” he noted. “So when you get into maybe some of your longer-yardage situations… He’s converted a few too.” Prentice’s ability to adapt and perform in various roles within the offense showcases his importance as a reliable, albeit unsung, component of the Broncos’ game plan.

As the season progresses, Prentice’s contributions may continue to play a vital role in the Broncos’ pursuit of success, demonstrating that sometimes the biggest plays come from the most unexpected places.
