Denver Broncos face offensive dilemma despite strong record
The Denver Broncos hold a commendable 10-2 record, yet beneath the surface, their offensive struggles are becoming increasingly evident. While the team showcases potential, it finds itself grappling with a lack of offensive firepower. Many players currently in key roles appear better suited for more specialized duties, raising questions about the team’s overall offensive strategy.
Wide Receiver Woes
At the heart of the Broncos’ offensive issues is the wide receiver position. The team has yet to find a viable second option to complement Courtland Sutton, who remains the focal point of their passing game. Despite the promise shown by Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant, there is a clear gap in production that has prompted the Broncos to explore adding depth to their receiving corps.
In pursuit of a solution, the Broncos attempted to acquire Stefon Diggs in the offseason and were rumored to be active in trade discussions leading up to the NFL trade deadline. Although Franklin and Bryant have had flashes of success, neither has consistently delivered the impact expected from a No. 2 receiver. Their performances suggest they might be better utilized as third or fourth options in the lineup.
Then there’s Marvin Mims Jr. Initial preseason optimism surrounding his development has not translated into meaningful contributions on the field. Now in his third year, the likelihood of Mims making a significant leap as a traditional receiver seems slim. His best role may be as a fifth receiver, a return specialist, or a gadget player, rather than a reliable target in the passing game.
Recognizing these deficiencies, the Broncos need to prioritize acquiring another receiver during the offseason. A new addition could alleviate some of the pressure placed on Sutton, who currently shoulders much of the responsibility in the passing attack. However, this doesn’t imply the team is abandoning hope for Franklin and Bryant. Development from these younger players could ultimately enhance the receiving group, offering the Broncos more options moving forward.
Future Considerations
Sutton recently received a contract extension, yet the structure of that deal offers the Broncos flexibility if they choose to make changes down the line. Should the team successfully bring in a new receiver who can make an immediate impact, and if Franklin and Bryant continue their growth, the Broncos could be in a position to reconsider Sutton’s role, potentially freeing up both cap space and opportunities for other players.
As the Broncos navigate this complex landscape, the urgency to bolster their offensive arsenal becomes more apparent. With the postseason in sight, the need for a more dynamic offensive strategy is crucial to ensure their success continues beyond the regular season.
