Denver Broncos’ run game anxiety erupts as rookie RJ Harvey struggles to fill J.K. Dobbins’ shoes

Broncos Face Challenges in Run Game After Dobbins’ Absence

The Denver Broncos’ inaugural game without starting running back J.K. Dobbins did not yield the results they had hoped for. Rookie RJ Harvey was thrust into the spotlight as the team’s primary ball-carrier against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although he showed signs of improvement as the game progressed, the overall output from the run game left much to be desired.

Rookie Adjustments and Contributions

Harvey, stepping up in a critical role, faced the daunting task of filling Dobbins’ shoes. While his performance exhibited flashes of potential, the Broncos’ ground game struggled to find its rhythm. In a bid to bolster the backfield, Jaleel McLaughlin was finally activated from his inactive status and made an impact as the second-string running back. His contributions provided a much-needed spark, but the run game still fell short of expectations.

Tyler Badie, another option in the backfield, saw minimal action. Though he suited up, he recorded just one catch for eight yards, failing to make a significant imprint on the game. This situation has led to growing concerns among fans, as they speculate about the future dynamics of the Broncos’ run game in the wake of Dobbins’ absence.

Coaching Confidence Amidst Concerns

Despite the anxiety brewing within Broncos Country, head coach Sean Payton remains unfazed. He expressed confidence in the trio of backs at his disposal as the team gears up for the final stretch of the season. “Yes, I am [comfortable]. I felt like we had limited snaps to some degree, but Jaleel has played a lot of good football for us,” Payton stated. “Meanwhile, he and RJ both are coming on.” His reassurance may quell some fears, as the team looks to adapt and find its footing in the run game.

Fullback’s Impact on Protection

Fullback Adam Prentice also played a pivotal role in the game against the Chiefs. He not only served as a lead blocker but also demonstrated his value in pass protection, helping to shield quarterback Bo Nix from Kansas City’s aggressive defensive schemes. Payton noted Prentice’s effectiveness, particularly in critical situations. “Adam did a good job in some of the sub-protection stuff we felt with Kansas City. There are some looks where you’re always paying attention to the size of the back in third-down pickup. He had a few rhino tags where he was in on third down and was fantastic,” Payton said.

Prentice’s standout moment included an impressive pancake block that allowed Nix the time needed to execute a precise pass, showcasing the importance of cohesive teamwork in overcoming adversity.

As the Broncos prepare to navigate the remaining six games of the season, the collective efforts of Harvey, McLaughlin, Badie, and Prentice will be critical in defining the trajectory of the run game without Dobbins. The team’s ability to adapt and evolve in this challenging period will ultimately determine their success on the field.
