Broncos’ McLaughlin Sparks Optimism with Touchdown Against Chiefs
The Denver Broncos faced a challenging environment in their Week 11 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, especially in the absence of their leading rusher, J.K. Dobbins. The team’s rushing attack struggled significantly, managing only 59 total yards on the ground. Rookie running back RJ Harvey contributed 30 of those yards, but his performance was marked by an unimpressive average of just 2.7 yards per carry on 11 attempts.
A Bright Spot Emerges
Despite the struggles, there was a silver lining in the Broncos’ narrow 22-19 victory. Head coach Sean Payton identified Jaleel McLaughlin as a key player who stepped up during the game. “I think looking back at it, Jaleel had a handful of good runs,” Payton remarked during a Monday press conference. He emphasized the importance of McLaughlin’s role as the team navigates the remainder of the season. Additionally, Payton praised both Harvey and fullback Adam Prentice, the latter of whom delivered an impressive performance, contributing not only in his designated role but also effectively handling pressure situations on third down against the Chiefs.
McLaughlin’s Impact on the Ground Game
Active for only the second time this season, McLaughlin made his presence felt against Kansas City. He turned six carries into 19 yards, averaging a team-best 3.2 yards per carry. His most significant contribution came when he punched in a four-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, a moment that reignited the Broncos’ hope on the field.
The 5-foot-7 running back, a third-year undrafted free agent, has seemingly eclipsed Tyler Badie in the depth chart as the backup to Harvey. Moreover, with the Broncos having attempted to secure running back Dameon Pierce without success, McLaughlin is poised for an expanded role as the regular season approaches its climax.
Looking Ahead
Fresh off their bye week, McLaughlin and the Broncos are set to face the Washington Commanders in Week 13. The Commanders’ defense has struggled this season, ranking 27th in rushing yards allowed per game and 25th in yards allowed per rush. This matchup presents an opportunity for the Broncos to capitalize on their rushing game, and McLaughlin’s recent performance could be pivotal in enhancing the team’s offensive capabilities as they push for a stronger finish to the season.
