Broncos Secure AFC West Title as Sean Payton Critiques Division Gear
In a turn of events that solidified their status as AFC West champions, the Denver Broncos clinched the divisional title during the Christmas Night showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs. This achievement was made possible when the Los Angeles Chargers fell short against the Houston Texans, ending their hopes and sealing the championship for the Broncos with an 11-5 record.
Payton Reflects on the Journey
Broncos head coach Sean Payton shared his thoughts during a Monday conference call, reflecting on the intensity of the weekend’s games. “I was watching it probably like everyone else, and it ended up being a close game, hard-fought game,” he remarked. Following the game, Payton emphasized the need to shift focus to the upcoming challenges. “Then I think the immediate focus shifts towards Monday’s meeting, which we just had, relative to our approach this week. Normal schedule, Sunday 2:25 start time.”
The players enjoyed a brief respite over the weekend, taking advantage of a mini-bye before returning to practice as champions.
A Low-Key Celebration
Upon their return, however, Payton chose not to highlight the AFC West victory in the team meeting. Instead, he had division champion gear placed in each player’s locker by Broncos equipment manager Chris ‘Flip’ Valenti. “Flip says, he texted me, ‘What do you want me to do?’ And I said, ‘Just put them in the lockers.’ We actually didn’t even talk about it,” Payton explained.
Despite the absence of a formal celebration, the gear’s aesthetics drew some attention. Payton admitted to having not seen the hats or shirts, but shared his candid opinion, stating, “My understanding is they’re pretty ugly.”
Mixed Reactions to the Gear
The gear, which features the slogan “Been there, won that,” has sparked mixed feelings among players, including tight end Adam Trautman, who expressed confusion over the phrase. “I didn’t get that,” he said, highlighting the disconnect some players feel with the merchandise.
As the Broncos gear up for the next phase of their season, the focus remains on performance rather than appearances, with the AFC West title now a part of their storied legacy.
