Denver Broncos’ contract frenzy: Sean Payton reveals plans for key player extensions amidst winning streak

Date:

Contract Extensions on the Horizon

The Denver Broncos have officially confirmed a three-year extension with kicker Wil Lutz, a move that aligns with a growing trend of contract negotiations within the team. As the franchise looks to secure its future, Lutz’s new deal signifies the Broncos’ commitment to key players as they navigate a pivotal season.

Key Players in Contract Years

Lutz is not the only one on the roster nearing the end of his contract. Several other prominent players are also entering contract years, prompting a strategic approach from the Broncos’ management. On Monday, head coach Sean Payton shared insights into the team’s plans, indicating that he and general manager George Paton have initiated discussions with some of these players, although he refrained from naming any specific individuals.

“George and I, before the break, discussed a number of players that we’re going to visit with,” Payton stated. “The key is not affecting the mojo or how your team’s doing. I’m always sensitive to that, especially when you’re playing well, because sometimes those can be difficult discussions.”

Maintaining Momentum Amidst Negotiations

The Broncos are currently riding high, boasting an impressive eight-game winning streak as they emerge from their bye week. Payton is acutely aware of the potential distractions that contract discussions can introduce, especially during a successful stretch. He emphasized the importance of communication, aiming to ensure that any dialogues regarding extensions do not disrupt the rhythm or focus of the players involved.

“There are a few other players that we know we’ve reached out to, and I think the key is the communication aspect of it all,” Payton added, underscoring the delicate balance between contract talks and maintaining team synergy.

Potential Candidates for Extensions

While Lutz’s extension is secured, the spotlight now turns to other key players whose contracts are also up for renewal. The Broncos have a few notable names that could benefit from a call to negotiate an extension. Here’s a look at some of the players who are likely on the Broncos’ radar:

John Franklin-Myers | DL
Malcolm Roach | DL
Alex Singleton | LB
Justin Strnad | LB
Luke Wattenberg | C
J.K. Dobbins | RB
P.J. Locke | S
Adam Trautman | TE

Looking Ahead for the Broncos

As the Broncos continue their pursuit of success, the decisions made regarding these contract negotiations will play a critical role in shaping the team’s future. With a blend of careful planning and timely discussions, Denver aims to maintain its winning momentum while securing the players who have contributed to its current success. The coming weeks will reveal which players will receive extensions and how these decisions will influence the team dynamic moving forward.
