DeMario Douglas Spreads Thanksgiving Cheer with Turkey Drive
In the bustling world of the NFL, where victories and statistics often dominate the conversation, New England Patriots wide receiver DeMario Douglas has chosen to shine a light on a different kind of success—one that extends beyond the football field. As the Patriots enjoy a strong 10-2 season, Douglas took time away from his rigorous practice schedule to bring joy to local families in Massachusetts ahead of Thanksgiving.
A Heartfelt Initiative
Working in collaboration with Brunswick Sports Management, Jeffrey Glassman Injury Lawyers, Shaw’s, Star Market, and WEEI 93.7, Douglas teamed up with linebacker Anfernee Jennings to host a turkey drive benefitting local Boys and Girls Clubs. The two players embarked on a five-stop tour, visiting New Bedford, Brockton, Lynn, Lawrence, and Boston, delivering turkeys and Thanksgiving meals to those in need.
“This means a lot,” Douglas shared. “Just to be a blessing. I know a lot of kids don’t have much, and it’s probably hard to eat with what’s going on in the world right now. If I’m blessed, I can put a hand in and bless others.”
Building Community Connections
During their visit to the Boys and Girls Club of Metro South, Douglas took a moment to connect with staff, snapping photos and receiving a special gift—a club membership and a hat. His enthusiasm for the facility was palpable, especially after seeing the indoor basketball court where the event was held.
The impact of the initiative was significant, with hundreds of turkeys distributed across Massachusetts. Once the formalities were complete, Douglas’s playful spirit took over as he sought out a basketball, engaging with staff members in a friendly game of hoops. He demonstrated not only his athletic prowess but also his commitment to uplifting those around him, cheering on participants and prioritizing fun despite the absence of the club’s younger members.
Understanding the Importance of Giving Back
Douglas’s motivation for giving back is deeply personal. Reflecting on his upbringing, he recalled watching his mother work tirelessly to provide for their family. “It’s hard, life is hard. I watched my mama work very hard to get what we can’t get,” he said, underscoring the responsibility he feels as a professional athlete to support his community. “It wasn’t much, but it was enough.”
Turkey drives have become a tradition among Patriots players, with many participating in similar initiatives. While Jennings was busy at other locations, kicker Andy Borregales and running back Terrell Jennings were also contributing to the cause, demonstrating a collective effort to support local families.
A Personal Touch to Thanksgiving
For Douglas, Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday; it’s a chance to celebrate family traditions. While he contributed to the turkey drive, he humorously noted his preference for another dish on the Thanksgiving table. “Ham, gotta have ham,” he said, proudly referencing his Southern roots. “We do things that don’t really belong at Thanksgiving, but we do it—like macaroni and cheese and baked beans.”
Douglas’s commitment to service and community engagement serves as a reminder of the profound impact athletes can make beyond the gridiron. Thanks to his and his teammates’ efforts, many families in Massachusetts will gather around a table filled with food and gratitude this Thanksgiving.
