David Montgomery’s Limited Role Raises Eyebrows as Lions Seek Offensive Balance
The Detroit Lions find themselves at a crossroads as they strive for more balance in their offensive attack, particularly in their run game. With a focus on improving their rushing effectiveness, especially against opponents with vulnerabilities, the Lions’ recent matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles showcased a troubling trend: the underutilization of running back David Montgomery.
Lions’ Ground Game Needs Improvement
Heading into the clash with the Eagles, expectations were high for Detroit’s ground game, especially considering Philadelphia’s struggles against the run early in the season. Lions head coach Dan Campbell had expressed concern about the team’s average of just 3.5 yards per carry during their Week 11 loss.
When asked about Montgomery’s usage, particularly in crucial short-yardage situations, Campbell’s response was candid yet revealing. “Well, I always like to get David more carries. Always,” he stated, indicating a desire for greater involvement from the veteran running back. However, the reality of the game was stark; Montgomery managed only six carries for 27 yards, while rookie Jahmyr Gibbs logged 39 yards on 12 attempts.
A Call for Collective Effort
Campbell acknowledged that rectifying the offensive struggles would require a unified effort from the entire team. He expressed his ongoing confidence in the offensive line, emphasizing the need for them to gel and improve as the season progresses. “I believe in these guys, man. I do. I just think the more they play together and they mesh, and we just do things that we do well,” Campbell said.
Reflecting on the game, he noted, “There’s a couple of things I wish yesterday maybe I do differently… Just a little bit that I think maybe can help our guys, too.” His mind raced with strategies and adjustments, underscoring his commitment to finding solutions.
Despite the setback, the Lions hold a respectable 6-4 record and are set to play their next three games at Ford Field. Campbell remains optimistic about the potential of his offensive weapons, noting, “We’re so close, but there again, we can be so potent. I mean, (Jameson Williams) Jamo right now has taken off. (Jahmyr) Gibbs has taken off.” He expressed confidence in the connections between his playmakers, particularly the rapport between Amon-Ra St. Brown and quarterback Jared Goff.
Looking Ahead
The Lions are in a position where their next steps will be crucial. As they prepare to face upcoming opponents, Campbell’s focus will undoubtedly remain on enhancing their offensive strategy. “I mean, it’s always there. It was just one of those days yesterday. And we just, we all elevate a little bit, including myself, we’re going to be just fine,” he concluded, conveying a sense of determination to turn the tide as the season unfolds.
