Jahmyr Gibbs Takes Center Stage in Detroit Lions’ Rushing Attack
The Detroit Lions have identified Jahmyr Gibbs as their primary running back, shifting the dynamics of the backfield. Veteran David Montgomery has seen a noticeable decline in both his snap counts and carries compared to last season, as Gibbs emerges as the centerpiece of Detroit’s rushing strategy.
Praise Amidst Transition
Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged Montgomery’s professionalism during this transition. He emphasized the difficulties players face when their roles change. “David is a pro. You know, he goes about his business and handles it,” Campbell remarked. The coach understands the challenges Montgomery faces, especially as a talented player eager to contribute to the team’s success.
“It’s not easy,” Campbell continued. “Every good player wants their chance to help the team win and get some production. But he’s a pro. He handles his business and goes about it. Whenever you call his number, he’s ready to go.”
Campbell also reflected on the challenge of integrating multiple players into the offense. “I think a lot about how to get them all involved. When they’re all engaged, we’re just better. We’re a better offense. So, where do we get him touches? Where do we find them? I do think about him a lot,” he stated.
Offensive Challenges and Opportunities
Despite these praises, Detroit’s offense has faced challenges executing on crucial third and fourth downs, complicating efforts to distribute the football effectively. Alongside Gibbs, wide receiver Jameson Williams has stepped up as a reliable asset. However, injuries to both starting tight ends have slightly hindered the blocking scheme, impacting overall effectiveness in the rushing game.
When asked whether increasing the number of offensive plays could enhance Montgomery’s production, Campbell acknowledged the potential benefits. “The more plays is always going to help,” he said. “But it’s about which series do you do it in. It’s one thing to bring him in, but maybe before that, we should start tagging some things for him to get involved early in our series and then get your breather.”
Campbell noted that they have experimented with various formations, including two-back sets and three-receiver alignments, as they navigate the current situation.
A Season of Transition for Montgomery
At 28 years old, Montgomery is on track for career lows in total carries and rushing yards this season, a stark contrast to his previous performances. As the Lions continue to develop their offensive identity, the challenge remains to find a balance that allows Montgomery to contribute while maximizing Gibbs’ potential as the focal point of the rushing attack.
