Dan Quinn addresses Commanders’ struggle with complementary football
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is stepping up to analyze the obstacles hampering his team’s performance this season. With a record of 3-3 after six games, the Commanders are in a precarious position. Despite this even slate, Quinn believes they could easily have four or five wins if not for some missed opportunities, particularly evident in their recent loss to the Chicago Bears.
Identifying the core issue
Quinn pinpointed the lack of complementary football as the primary issue affecting the team’s success.
“Just the fact that we haven’t done complementary [football] as well as we need to in the six games,” he explained. “There have been times when we have, and it feels like winning. The things we do feed off of one another. But then there are times when we don’t capitalize, like when we had a chance at the end to get some points at the half and missed those spots.”
His observations highlight a crucial aspect of the game: the synergy between offense and defense. Quinn noted a positive response from the defense during critical moments, especially in their two-minute drill at the half. He emphasized the importance of consistency, stating, “The more we can lean into one another, the better it is for us. That’s plain and simple, and when we’re at our best. So, that’s what I want to make sure we capture—not just some of the time, but all the time.”
Room for improvement
Last season, the Commanders thrived on complementary football, which played a significant role in their 11-win campaign and subsequent playoff berth. Currently, their trajectory suggests a potential eight or nine wins, a figure that likely wouldn’t suffice for postseason contention. However, Quinn remains optimistic, as the team has identified its shortcomings and is committed to addressing them.
As they prepare for their Week 7 clash against the Dallas Cowboys in the Lone Star State, the Commanders know that execution will be key. The focus now shifts to translating their plans into action, hoping to turn the tide in their favor.
Looking ahead
With the season still in its early stages, the Commanders are aware that every game counts. The upcoming match against the Cowboys presents an opportunity to demonstrate the growth Quinn is advocating for. As they aim to improve their record and reclaim their status as playoff contenders, the importance of complementary football will remain at the forefront of their strategy.
