Dan Campbell Stands Firm as Lions’ Offensive Play-Caller
In a bold move that reflects his steadfast approach, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has confirmed he will continue to call the offensive plays as the team prepares for a pivotal matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. When asked about his decision during an interview, Campbell expressed his conviction, stating, “Yeah. I think it’s the right thing to do right now.”
Maintaining Offensive Control
Since taking over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator John Morton in Week 10, Campbell has helmed the offense for four games, guiding the team to a 2-2 record. Under his leadership, the Lions have averaged an impressive 27.8 points per game. Notably, in his debut as play-caller, the Lions delivered a stellar performance, scoring 44 points without a single punt against the Washington Commanders. However, the following weeks have presented challenges, including a disappointing nine-point outing against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11.
With the stakes rising ahead of the upcoming game against the Cowboys, the urgency to find consistency has never been greater.
Addressing Defensive Concerns
While Campbell remains focused on the offense, he also acknowledged significant issues on the defensive side, particularly concerning the pass rush. The Lions have managed just one sack in their last two games, a game-clinching effort by Aidan Hutchinson against the Giants. Analyzing the team’s struggles, Campbell pointed to the effective game plan employed by the Green Bay Packers, which thwarted the Lions’ attempts to pressure quarterback Jordan Love.
“Basically, how long does it take for this ball to get off? What is the depth of the pocket?” Campbell elaborated, emphasizing the need to assess each play critically. “There were about three plays in there where we’ve got time to get there and we’re not getting there. Everything else was ball out, or we got disruption, and the ball’s out and they’re making a play.”
Looking Ahead: Prioritizing Pressure
As the Lions prepare for their crucial stretch, Campbell is eager to see improvements in his team’s ability to win one-on-one matchups and consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks. “On those plays, we’ve got to be better,” he stated. “We’ve got to find a way to get there. The guys who have a one-on-one have to show up and have to become disruptive faster than we were on those the other night.”
With Campbell’s dedication to both the offensive and defensive fronts, the Lions are poised to navigate a challenging road ahead, striving for a return to form as they face the Cowboys.
