Dan Campbell Addresses Key Team Issues: Ragnow’s Return, Trade Scenarios, and TeSlaa’s Role
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell took to the airwaves during his weekly radio interview on 97.1 The Ticket, tackling several pressing topics regarding his team. From injury updates to trade strategies, Campbell provided insights into the current state of the Lions as they navigate the season.
Trade Deadline Insights
As the trade deadline approaches, Campbell reiterated the Lions’ cautious approach to making any deals. General manager Brad Holmes has expressed interest in acquiring an offensive lineman, but the costs are notoriously steep.
“Typically, trades for offensive linemen are rare,” Campbell stated. “Teams value these players highly, and that means draft capital is going to be a significant factor in any potential deal.” He emphasized that any trade would need to involve the right player, fit, and price. The head coach is focused solely on the Lions’ process and isn’t concerned with the moves of other teams around the league.
Kerby Joseph’s Injury Update
Injury concerns continue to plague the Lions, particularly with safety Kerby Joseph. His knee irritation has not improved as quickly as desired.
“The irritation is not going away as fast as we had hoped,” Campbell explained. “There is improvement, but it’s just not quite there yet.” The coach stressed the importance of allowing Joseph’s injury to heal properly, stating that rushing his return could lead to ongoing issues. “We’re not going to force this until we get it to calm down as much as we possibly can,” he added.
Frank Ragnow’s Future
Fans have been eager to know if Frank Ragnow will make a return, especially in light of the offensive line’s recent struggles. However, Campbell’s comments suggest that a comeback is unlikely.
“Here’s what I know about Frank: if he really wanted to, he would be blowing my phone up,” Campbell remarked. “And I haven’t gotten a text yet, so I think Frank is feeling good about his decision.” He also celebrated Ragnow’s recent personal milestone, mentioning that the lineman has welcomed a new baby into his family. “That ship has sailed,” Campbell concluded, indicating that Ragnow’s focus may be elsewhere for now.
Isaac TeSlaa’s Increasing Role
The Lions’ offensive performance on third downs has been a significant concern this season. Part of the team’s success last year stemmed from effectively utilizing their third wide receiver. This year, however, Isaac TeSlaa’s usage has raised eyebrows.
“We need to get ‘Lif (Kalif Raymond) involved, and we need to get TeSlaa involved,” Campbell said. He expressed a desire to see TeSlaa on the field more frequently in the coming weeks. “I’d like to get him on the field a little bit more,” he added, noting that adjustments were needed following the bye week.
As the Lions continue to navigate the challenges of the season, Campbell’s insights shed light on the team’s current priorities and the decisions that lie ahead.
