Risner’s Plea to the Bengals
Dalton Risner is making it clear: he doesn’t want to find himself navigating the free agency market come March. The veteran offensive lineman, currently suiting up for the Cincinnati Bengals, expressed his desire to solidify his future with the team after a standout season.
A New Year’s Resolution
In a recent conversation with ESPN’s Ben Baby in the Bengals’ locker room, Risner shared his New Year’s resolution. “To avoid being signed in August or September,” he remarked with a grin, emphasizing the urgency of his situation. Risner’s performance this season has been impressive, highlighted by a career-best Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 69.3. If he plays a full game against the Cleveland Browns, it will mark his highest snap total since 2022.
He took a lighthearted approach to his plea, urging Baby to relay his message to Bengals’ management: “Make sure you send that straight to Duke Tobin and the whole Bengals organization for me, man, expedite that right to them.”
Finding a Home in Cincinnati
Risner has made significant strides since joining the Bengals. Under the guidance of offensive line coach Scott Peters, the unit has soared to 11th in the NFL, boasting a commendable 5.4% sack rate allowed. His recent performance in Week 17 showcased his skills, earning him an impressive 83.4 PFF pass-blocking grade, which ranked eighth among guards.
Reflecting on his time with the Bengals, Risner stated, “I’ve really found a home here. I’ve really enjoyed this season.” He expressed his hopes, saying, “I’d love it if the Bengals didn’t let me get to March. That’s not my choice. The ball is in their court. I’d love to stay and be a Bengal.”
An Opportunity for Continuity
Currently, Risner is concluding a one-year contract worth $1.19 million, signed just before the season commenced. Though he faced challenges early on, he has emerged as the Bengals’ premier right guard option. Should the team decide to extend his contract before the free agency window opens, it would not only provide stability for Risner but also ensure continuity along the offensive line. With every starter from this season potentially under contract through 2026, the Bengals would maintain a solid foundation heading into the offseason.
In light of Risner’s growth and the promising direction of the offensive line, the Bengals may find compelling reasons to secure his services before the spring thaw.
