Dallas Cowboys trade frenzy: eyeing pass rushers Key, Phillips, Chubb, and Koonce for defensive boost

Dallas Cowboys eyeing defensive reinforcements ahead of trade deadline

The Dallas Cowboys find themselves at a pivotal moment as they approach the NFL trade deadline. With a crucial Week 9 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals looming, the pressure is mounting for the Cowboys to bolster their defense. League insider Ian Rapoport has shed light on potential targets that could help the Cowboys enhance their defensive unit.

Urgency for Defensive Improvement

The Cowboys’ defense has struggled significantly in the early part of the season. With weaknesses evident at all three levels of the defense, the front office is keen to make adjustments. A strong performance against the Cardinals could serve as a springboard into the second half of the season, especially if they can add reinforcements through trade.

As the clock ticks down to the trade deadline, Rapoport highlighted that the Cowboys are actively pursuing pass rushers. The need for a defensive boost has never been more apparent, and several names have emerged as viable options.

Potential Pass Rushing Targets

Among the players being considered are several high-profile edge rushers. While names like Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals and Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders have garnered attention, Rapoport pointed out other intriguing options.

Arden Key (Tennessee Titans)
Key has shown promise since entering the league as a third-round pick in 2018. He has had stints with multiple teams, including the Raiders and the Titans. Over his career, he has accumulated 176 tackles and 28 sacks, bringing valuable experience to the Cowboys’ pass rush.

Jaelan Phillips (Miami Dolphins)
Despite battling injuries, Phillips has demonstrated his potential when healthy. In the 2022 season, he managed 61 tackles and seven sacks. This season, he has recorded 21 tackles and two sacks. If available for a fourth-round pick, the Cowboys would be wise to consider this move, given his high-risk, high-reward profile.

Bradley Chubb (Miami Dolphins)
Chubb, a former first-round pick, has also faced injury setbacks but has a solid career resume, including 42.5 sacks. After missing the entire 2024 season due to a torn ACL, he remains a player with significant upside, though his injury history raises concerns.

Malcolm Koonce (Las Vegas Raiders)
Koonce, another third-round pick, had a breakout year in 2023 before a knee injury sidelined him for the entire 2024 season. He has recorded 72 tackles and 11 sacks in his career, and while he may be the least experienced option, his potential makes him an interesting prospect for the Cowboys.

Trade Deadline Approaching

The NFL trade deadline is set for Tuesday, November 4, at 4:00 p.m. ET. With the Cowboys’ defense in need of immediate reinforcements, the next couple of days will be crucial. The team’s management will be looking to make a move that could significantly impact their playoff aspirations as the season progresses.

As the Cowboys gear up for their matchup against the Cardinals, the possibility of adding new talent to the roster looms large. The right trade could not only enhance their defensive capabilities but also reshape the trajectory of their season.
