Dallas Cowboys eye under-the-radar trade targets to bolster defense without sacrificing first-round pick

Dallas Cowboys eye trade candidates to strengthen defense ahead of deadline

As the NFL trade deadline approaches, the Dallas Cowboys find themselves navigating a pivotal moment in their season. With a record of 3-4-1, they remain in the playoff conversation within the NFC, despite a series of frustrating losses. The Cowboys’ offense has proven capable of competing with the best, but their defense leaves much to be desired. In light of this, the front office is actively exploring options to enhance their defensive lineup without sacrificing their valuable first-round draft pick.

Seeking Strategic Additions

While the chatter around high-profile defenders continues, the Cowboys are considering more understated options that could yield substantial returns. Rather than pursuing marquee names that would command a first-round pick, Dallas has the opportunity to acquire talent that can bolster their defensive unit without breaking the bank. Here are three under-the-radar candidates worth considering:

Keeanu Benton, DT, Pittsburgh Steelers

Keeanu Benton, a defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has not yet made the impact many anticipated following his selection in the second round of the 2023 draft. Although he was brought in to be a run-stuffing nose tackle, his performance has not aligned with those expectations. This potential mismatch could make him available as the trade deadline approaches. While Benton may not directly address the Cowboys’ struggles against the run, he possesses the versatility to serve as a solid rotational 3-technique who could thrive with a change of scenery. Furthermore, Dallas desperately needs players who can apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks, an area where Benton could contribute.

Jordyn Brooks, LB, Miami Dolphins

Another intriguing option comes in the form of Jordyn Brooks, a linebacker for the Miami Dolphins. Known for his ability to locate the football, Brooks has been a standout performer, tallying 93 tackles, six tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks through the first nine games of the season. The Dolphins, currently sitting at 2-6, may be inclined to make significant changes, and Brooks could be a key asset in that process. Notably, he has a connection to Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, having been drafted by the Seattle Seahawks during Schottenheimer’s final year there. With one year remaining on his contract beyond this season, Brooks could provide immediate help and future stability for Dallas’s defense.

Trey Flowers, DE, Miami Dolphins

Finally, the Cowboys could look to bring in Trey Flowers, a defensive end also with the Miami Dolphins. Flowers has a history of being a disruptive force on the defensive line, and while he may not be the flashiest name, his experience and skill set could enhance Dallas’s pass rush. Given the Dolphins’ current struggles, they might be willing to part with Flowers for the right price, and the Cowboys could benefit from his ability to engage in both run defense and pass rushing situations.

Exploring the Trade Market

As the Cowboys weigh their options, it is clear they are in a position to make strategic moves that could reshape their defense without the need to sacrifice key future assets. By targeting these under-the-radar players, Dallas could strengthen its squad while maintaining the balance necessary for long-term success. The upcoming trade deadline represents a critical juncture for the Cowboys, offering them the chance to bolster their roster and make a push for the postseason.
