Dallas Cowboys eye Trey Hendrickson blockbuster trade as defensive crisis deepens

Date:

Cowboys Pursue Trey Hendrickson as Defensive Struggles Intensify

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for potential action ahead of the NFL trade deadline, eyeing a significant addition to their defensive lineup. Among the names circulating is former sack leader Trey Hendrickson, currently with the Cincinnati Bengals. This pursuit comes at a critical moment for the Cowboys, who have struggled defensively this season.

Defensive Woes Prompt Trade Considerations

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted that the franchise is “open for business” as they look to enhance their roster, particularly on the defensive side. The team’s defensive performance has been subpar, characterized by a lackluster pass rush and a secondary that has consistently allowed opposing offenses to exploit weaknesses. Despite these challenges, the Cowboys remain competitive in a tightly contested NFC East, which could push them to make a bold move if they stay in contention.

NFL insider Tony Pauline noted that the Cowboys are likely to pursue Hendrickson if they position themselves favorably as November approaches. The defensive end, who led the league in sacks last season, could provide the spark the Cowboys desperately need.

Draft Capital and Potential Trade Scenarios

Dallas possesses the necessary draft capital to make a substantial offer for Hendrickson, should he become available. The team holds two first-round picks, which could be leveraged in negotiations. However, the question remains whether Jerry Jones is willing to be aggressive enough to secure a player of Hendrickson’s caliber, especially given the current state of the defense.

The Cowboys have eight picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, offering them the flexibility to negotiate. If the Bengals are willing to entertain offers, a second-round pick could be a straightforward deal for Dallas. Alternatively, they might consider utilizing one of their first-round picks received in the Micah Parsons trade, which is expected to be a late selection, to sweeten the offer.

Financial Considerations and Player Impact

While adding Hendrickson could be beneficial, the Cowboys must weigh the financial implications. He is in the final year of his contract, and the franchise will need to be strategic about salary commitments, especially with other star players like George Pickens and Brandon Aubrey also requiring consideration in the offseason.

This season, Hendrickson has recorded four sacks and a forced fumble over six games, showcasing his impact. In contrast, the Cowboys currently have Justin Houston leading their sack count with just 3.5, and the overall team total stands at a mere 11. The urgency to bolster the defense is palpable, particularly with the offense, led by Dak Prescott, performing at a high level.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Cowboys must navigate their options wisely. Adding a player like Hendrickson could not only reshape their defensive strategy but also provide a much-needed boost as they look to solidify their playoff aspirations.
