Dallas Cowboys consider Trevon Diggs trade amid contract turmoil and defensive woes

The Dallas Cowboys find themselves at a crossroads as the NFL trade deadline approaches, with All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs emerging as a potential trade candidate. While the team is expected to be active buyers to bolster their defense, the prospect of selling off key players like Diggs raises questions about the organization’s internal dynamics and decision-making.

Trevon Diggs’ Injury Complicates Trade Talks

Diggs is currently on injured reserve due to a right knee issue, which will sideline him for at least three more weeks. Additionally, he has missed two games earlier this season due to a concussion resulting from an undisclosed incident at home. Despite these setbacks, NFL insider Jordan Schultz indicates that there is still a viable trade market for the talented cornerback. However, the success of any potential deal hinges on how much of Diggs’ salary the Cowboys are willing to absorb.

“Yeah, I do. I do,” Schultz affirmed when asked if teams are interested in Diggs. “There is clearly a real disconnect between him and the front office and the organization. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out, based on what Jerry has said, based on what Micah has said in recent days.”

Contract Considerations for the Cowboys

Diggs’ current situation is particularly intriguing given his contract. He is earning $8.5 million this season, a reduction from the original $9 million due to his limited participation in the offseason program. The five-year, $97 million deal he signed includes no guaranteed money beyond this season, which could make him an attractive option for teams looking to acquire a top-tier cornerback without the burden of long-term financial commitment.

“There is a market for Diggs, but the question is how much salary Dallas would be willing to take on,” Schultz noted. “He still has three years left, but there’s nothing guaranteed after this season, which could facilitate a move.”

Tension Between Diggs and the Organization

The relationship between Diggs and the Cowboys has been strained, particularly following his decision to rehabilitate his knee injury away from the team’s facilities, which resulted in a $500,000 penalty during the offseason. Earlier this season, Diggs expressed frustration with the team’s defensive scheme, further complicating his standing within the organization. He even found himself benched for the first time since his rookie season, signaling a growing rift that may necessitate a change of scenery for both parties.

“I would imagine that maybe both sides might benefit from a change of scenery,” Schultz suggested, hinting at the potential for a fresh start for Diggs elsewhere.

Future Implications for the Cowboys’ Defense

As the Cowboys prepare to navigate the trade deadline, the question remains whether they will address their defensive struggles by acquiring talent or by making a bold move to part ways with one of their star players. The outcome could significantly impact the team’s performance this season and their long-term strategy in building a competitive roster. The looming decision about Trevon Diggs could be a defining moment for the Cowboys’ management as they evaluate their direction amidst the pressures of the NFL landscape.
