Dallas Cowboys eye sensational Tony Pollard reunion to boost RB depth before trade deadline

Dallas Cowboys consider Tony Pollard reunion ahead of trade deadline

The Dallas Cowboys are facing critical decisions as the NFL trade deadline approaches. While much of the focus has been on bolstering their defense, the team’s offensive depth, particularly in the running back position, warrants attention.

Offensive Performance and Depth Concerns

Javonte Williams has emerged as a standout player for the Cowboys, showcasing his skills with 633 rushing yards and eight touchdowns through the first half of the season. His performance has been a bright spot for the offense, but concerns linger about the lack of reliable support behind him.

Currently, Miles Sanders ranks second on the team with 117 rushing yards, but he has been sidelined on injured reserve since Week 4. The rookie, Jaydon Blue, who has taken on the RB2 role, has managed only 65 yards on 22 attempts, leaving the Cowboys with a precarious depth chart as they enter Week 9.

Looking to the Titans for a Solution

Given these challenges, the Cowboys should contemplate a reunion with former leading rusher Tony Pollard. After leaving Dallas for the Tennessee Titans in the offseason, Pollard signed a three-year contract worth $21.75 million. His first season in Tennessee saw him rush for 1,079 yards and five touchdowns, but his performance has dipped this year, as he has accumulated just 424 yards and two touchdowns while averaging a career-low 3.9 yards per carry.

Pollard’s struggles in Tennessee are reflective of broader issues within the team, which has not been able to capitalize on his abilities. Reports indicate that the Titans are fielding trade inquiries on several players, including Pollard. This presents a potential opportunity for the Cowboys to acquire a familiar face who could alleviate their running back woes.

Evaluating the Trade Feasibility

From a trade perspective, Pollard’s value may not be at its peak, potentially making it easier for the Cowboys to negotiate a deal. The primary consideration for Dallas would be Pollard’s contract. Following his departure in 2024, would Jerry Jones be open to assuming the remaining terms of Pollard’s deal?

A potential out in Pollard’s contract after this season could make the idea of a one-year rental more appealing to the Cowboys. This arrangement would offer Dallas the chance to secure a capable backup should Williams face any setbacks, while also providing Pollard the opportunity to revitalize his career in a familiar environment.

As the trade deadline looms, the Cowboys must weigh their options carefully, balancing the need for immediate depth with the long-term implications of their decisions. The reunion with Pollard remains a strategic possibility as they strive for success in the latter half of the season.
