Dallas Cowboys draft shocker targeting two defensive stars to fix playoff woes

The Dallas Cowboys’ struggles this season have been painfully evident, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. To become serious contenders in the near future, the team must address its defensive inadequacies. As they look ahead to the offseason, a change in leadership may be on the horizon, with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus reportedly under scrutiny. With the Cowboys officially eliminated from playoff contention, they can now shift their focus to the 2026 NFL Draft, where they have the chance to select players who can step into key roles immediately.

Draft Strategy and First-Round Picks

The Cowboys are fortunate to hold two first-round picks in the upcoming draft, allowing them the opportunity to bolster their defense significantly. Recent projections from experts suggest that Dallas will prioritize defensive talent, aiming to fill gaps that have hindered their performance this season.

In his latest mock draft, Josh Edwards from CBS Sports highlighted the team’s need to address the defensive line, particularly at the EDGE position, while also considering a potential successor to cornerback Trevon Diggs. The 2026 NFL Draft will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from April 23 to April 25, providing the Cowboys ample time to plot their strategy.

Potential First-Round Selections

Pick No. 13: Keldric Faulk, EDGE, Auburn

One of the top prospects on the Cowboys’ radar is Keldric Faulk, a dynamic EDGE rusher from Auburn. Faulk’s selection would not only enhance the pass rush but also bolster the run defense, an area where the Cowboys have struggled. The team is still feeling the impact of DeMarcus Lawrence’s departure to the Seattle Seahawks, where he made the Pro Bowl this season.

Edwards noted, “Long and powerful has been the profile of pass rushers in Dallas.” Faulk fits that mold perfectly and has the potential to grow in a franchise known for developing elite defensive talent. This season, he has recorded 29 tackles, five tackles for a loss, and two sacks. Last year, he totaled 45 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, and seven sacks, showcasing his ability to impact games from the line of scrimmage.

Pick No. 21 (via Packers): Avieon Terrell, cornerback, Clemson

At pick No. 21, the Cowboys might look to strengthen their secondary with Clemson standout Avieon Terrell. With calls from fans and analysts urging the team to inject youth into the defensive backfield, Terrell presents a timely opportunity. The younger brother of Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell, he comes with an impressive pedigree.

Edwards pointed out the need for Dallas to refresh its cornerback lineup, stating, “Dallas is nearing the point where it needs to turn the page on its incumbent cornerback room.” With injuries plaguing the current roster, Terrell could serve as a valuable addition, bringing both skill and a fresh perspective to a beleaguered position. This season, he has amassed 30 total tackles, nine passes defended, five forced fumbles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, and three sacks, demonstrating his physicality and playmaking ability.

As the Cowboys prepare for the draft, these potential selections signal a commitment to revitalizing their defense. With a focus on both immediate contributions and future development, the upcoming draft could be a pivotal moment for a franchise seeking to return to playoff contention.
