Dallas Cowboys’ December Collapse Fuels Brian Schottenheimer’s Critique on Turnover Troubles
The Dallas Cowboys entered December riding high as one of the NFL’s most formidable teams, poised just 1.5 games behind the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East. However, as the month progressed, that optimism evaporated. The Cowboys stumbled through three consecutive losses, ultimately sealing their fate and eliminating them from postseason contention.
Turnover Issues Plague the Cowboys
In a candid moment on Friday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed one of the key factors that derailed the team’s season: their inability to generate turnovers. Speaking during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Schottenheimer emphasized that the turnover battle is critical for any team aspiring to advance in the playoffs.
“The biggest thing I look at with the teams that are advancing into the playoffs is that it’s all about the ball and the turnover battle,” Schottenheimer stated. “Quite honestly, we did not do a good enough job with that in either phase. I think we were minus seven, minus eight, something like that, and quite honestly, that’s terrible.”
His frustration was palpable as he contrasted his team’s performance with that of the league’s top teams. “You just pull up the top teams in the league. I think the Bears are at the top, whether it’s plus 20 or plus 18 or something like that, and how many of those teams are in the playoffs? It’s a pretty simple formula, and it’s certainly something that we will correct.”
Defensive Struggles and Future Changes
Throughout the season, the Cowboys’ defense consistently fell short, failing to provide adequate support for Dak Prescott and the offense. This raises questions about whether the issues stemmed from scheme misalignments or personnel deficiencies. As the offseason looms, the organization may need to consider significant changes, including potentially moving on from defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.
Schottenheimer’s remarks underscore the urgency of rectifying these issues as the team prepares for the season finale. With the culmination of the season set for January 4 at 1:00 p.m. ET against the New York Giants, all eyes will be on how the Cowboys regroup and address their shortcomings.
Looking Ahead
As the Cowboys aim to salvage a disappointing season, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely. The team has already begun considering offseason strategies, which may include adjustments to the roster and coaching staff. With the potential for significant changes on the horizon, the Dallas Cowboys enter a crucial period that could redefine their future.
