Dallas Cowboys coach slams Trevon Diggs to safety rumors: “I wouldn’t even think of that”

Dallas Cowboys Coach Dismisses Trevon Diggs to Safety Speculation

The Dallas Cowboys are set to return to practice on Sunday afternoon, having enjoyed a two-day break following a significant victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving Day. This triumph has propelled the Cowboys into December with a three-game winning streak. Their next challenge comes on December 4, when they face the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football, marking the beginning of Week 14 in the NFL regular season.

Trevon Diggs Returns to Practice

As Dallas prepares for this primetime matchup, the potential return of All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs looms large. After several weeks spent on injured reserve due to a concussion and knee injury, Diggs is officially back on the practice field as of Sunday.

However, discussions have emerged about possibly shifting Diggs to safety to address the team’s ongoing struggles at that position. In response to these rumors, head coach Brian Schottenheimer was unequivocal.

Coach Schottenheimer’s Firm Stance

“I wouldn’t even think of that,” Schottenheimer stated when asked about the possibility of moving Diggs to safety. He emphasized his belief that Diggs, when healthy, is best utilized as a shutdown corner. This perspective aligns with Diggs’ track record, as he has consistently demonstrated elite coverage skills throughout his career. Unfortunately, injuries have marred his ability to remain on the field.

The Challenges Facing Diggs

This season marks another chapter in the rollercoaster journey of Trevon Diggs, who is returning to action after two consecutive seasons cut short by knee injuries. This year, he has encountered yet another setback. In six games played, Diggs has recorded 18 tackles but has been unable to secure an interception or a pass defended. Earlier in the season, he found himself briefly benched; the coaching staff suggested this was due to injury issues, while Diggs interpreted it as a response to his sluggish start.

Adding to his troubles, Diggs sustained a concussion described as an “accident” at home, which subsequently led to his placement on injured reserve after further knee complications. With the opening of his 21-day practice window, he is now eligible to return just in time for Week 14.

A Track Record of Excellence and Challenges

In 2021, Diggs earned first-team All-Pro honors, leading the NFL with 11 interceptions. However, his aggressive playing style has also made him susceptible to giving up big plays. Since signing a lucrative five-year, $97 million extension with the Cowboys, he has participated in only 19 of 42 games, underscoring the challenges posed by injuries.

As the Cowboys gear up for their upcoming game against the Lions, the return of Trevon Diggs could prove vital. The team is looking to build on their recent success, and Diggs’ presence on the field may be crucial to maintaining their momentum in a competitive NFC landscape.
