Dallas Cowboys face turmoil as Trevon Diggs’ relationship with the team deteriorates
The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for their Sunday night showdown against the Minnesota Vikings, but they will do so without the presence of their All-Pro cornerback, Trevon Diggs. The standout player has been placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury and a concussion. Although his 21-day practice window opened two weeks ago, Diggs has yet to see any action on the field.
Concerns from the coaching staff
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed some troubling sentiments regarding Diggs’ situation, emphasizing the need for him to be consistent and adhere to the “right way” of returning. As of Saturday, the team officially ruled him out, raising further concerns about his recovery and future.
In the wake of these developments, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Diggs’ relationship with the Cowboys has taken a significant downturn, stating it has “soured” and “been severed.” This news arrives at a precarious moment, especially considering the questions surrounding Diggs’ role within the organization.
Off-field complications
The discord between Diggs and the Cowboys management dates back to the offseason, during which a disagreement over his recovery from knee surgery led to a substantial $500,000 pay reduction. While Diggs is undeniably a formidable talent when healthy, his ongoing inability to maintain consistent playing time has become a pressing issue. Coupled with apparent off-field tensions, it seems increasingly likely that Diggs’ tenure with the Cowboys may be nearing its end ahead of the 2026 season. If the team decides to part ways with him, they would stand to save around $18 million in cap space.
A season of disappointment
This season has been particularly disappointing for Diggs. Through the first six games, he has managed only 18 tackles and has yet to record a single interception. Earlier in the season, he was briefly benched, with coaching staff attributing this to injury concerns. However, Diggs speculated that the decision stemmed from his inconsistent performance.
Compounding the matter, he suffered a concussion during what he described as an “accident” at home, leaving fans and analysts puzzled about the details. Despite little information emerging from that incident, Diggs remarked, “It happens, it’s life. Things happen.”
As he takes the necessary time to recover from both his concussion and knee soreness, the hope remains that Diggs can return to his elite form. When at his peak, he is a shutdown cornerback capable of altering the dynamics of a game. Yet, since his first-team All-Pro selection in 2021, where he led the NFL with 11 interceptions, injuries have plagued him. Since signing a five-year, $97 million extension, Diggs has participated in just 19 of 42 games for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys are undoubtedly hoping for a healthy stretch from Diggs upon his return, but for now, the organization faces a pivotal moment regarding his future.
