Dallas Cowboys aim to secure a future with kicker Brandon Aubrey as next million-dollar extension candidate

Dallas Cowboys eye kicker Brandon Aubrey for a lucrative extension

The Dallas Cowboys are making strategic moves to secure their roster, aiming to extend players before they enter free agency. Amid these decisions, a pressing question arises: who should be the next player to receive a lucrative contract extension?

Recent Extensions and Strategic Moves

Under the guidance of owner and general manager Jerry Jones, the Cowboys are utilizing their salary cap efficiently. Recently, they made headlines by trading star linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. This move freed up resources, enabling the team to extend the contracts of key players DaRon Bland and Tyler Smith, tying up an impressive $180 million in salary between the two.

Jones has not stopped there. He successfully negotiated contracts with defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa prior to the onset of free agency. Additionally, extensions were granted to versatile receiver and return specialist KaVontae Turpin, fullback Hunter Luepke, and tight end Jake Ferguson. This proactive approach is refreshing for fans, as it signals a commitment to maintaining core players ahead of free agency.

Key Candidates for Extension

As the Cowboys look to further solidify their roster, two standout players are approaching free agency: wide receiver George Pickens and kicker Brandon Aubrey. On the surface, Pickens, as a skill position player and unrestricted free agent, may seem the more obvious choice for an extension. However, Aubrey, who will enter restricted free agency, has emerged as a compelling candidate for an early renewal.

Brandon Aubrey’s Impact

In just his third season, Aubrey has demonstrated remarkable consistency and skill. He has successfully converted 78 of 87 field goals, including an impressive 25 of 28 attempts from beyond 50 yards. His ability to deliver in clutch moments has made him a critical asset for the Cowboys’ offense, often stepping up when needed the most.

While kickers are not traditionally viewed as prime candidates for million-dollar contracts, Aubrey defies that norm. His performance on the field categorizes him as more than just a standard kicker; he is a game-changer who has proven his value time and again.

Next Steps for the Cowboys

Given Aubrey’s significant contributions, it would be prudent for Jones to prioritize negotiations with him. Locking in a player of his caliber could ensure stability in the kicking game, providing the Cowboys with a reliable performer as they navigate the competitive landscape of the NFL.

As the Cowboys continue to solidify their roster, the focus on extending Aubrey could set a positive tone for the future, ensuring that the team remains competitive as they strive for success in the coming seasons.
