Cowboys’ Klayton Adams addresses rookie Jaydon Blue’s uncertain potential
Klayton Adams, the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, acknowledges that rookie running back Jaydon Blue remains somewhat of an enigma. Despite entering the season with high expectations, Blue’s impact has been minimal, leaving many wondering about his future with the team.
A Slow Start for Jaydon Blue
Drafted in the fifth round from Texas, Blue was anticipated to add a dynamic element to the Cowboys’ backfield. However, after six weeks of play, he has yet to make a significant mark. Initially not expected to take on a leading role, his speed and pass-catching skills were seen as assets that could enhance the team’s offensive strategy. Unfortunately, Blue’s performance has been underwhelming, as he was a healthy scratch for the first four games of the season.
With Miles Sanders sidelined due to injury, Blue finally received his opportunity to step onto the field. Yet, his contributions have been limited to just seven yards on seven carries, and he has not recorded a single reception.
Adams Remains Optimistic
Despite the disappointing statistics, Adams remains hopeful about Blue’s potential. He emphasized that the rookie’s evaluation is still “to be determined,” highlighting the need for a more substantial sample size to assess his capabilities effectively.
“It’s been a really small sample size because we haven’t really gotten to a point in a game yet where we’ve been able to get him out there on a drive and give him three or four carries in a row, or quite frankly, just to give him some space to put him in,” Adams explained. He noted that the challenges posed by injuries have hindered the team’s ability to fully utilize Blue thus far.
The Competition for Playing Time
Currently positioned as the RB2 behind Javonte Williams, Blue faces competition in a backfield that is thin on options. With Sanders out, the Cowboys are left with fullback Hunter Luepke as the next available option, alongside Malik Davis, who resides on the practice squad. This scarcity has led to speculation about the team’s interest in external acquisitions, such as Jaylen Wright from the Miami Dolphins, who may be available via trade.
While Blue will have the chance to solidify his standing on the roster, his performance in the coming weeks is crucial. If he is unable to elevate his game, the Cowboys may need to explore alternatives to bolster their running back depth.
