Cowboys bring back fan favorite Ryan Flournoy to bolster special teams ahead of Giants showdown in Week 2

Cowboys sign Ryan Flournoy to 53-man roster before Week 2 clash with Giants

The Dallas Cowboys are making strategic moves ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the New York Giants, adding depth to their wide receiver lineup by signing Ryan Flournoy to the 53-man roster. This decision comes as the team places defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey on injured reserve, clearing the way for Flournoy’s return to the active squad.

Flournoy, a fan favorite, was initially waived by the Cowboys but soon rejoined the organization on the practice squad following a significant trade that saw linebacker Micah Parsons head to the Green Bay Packers. Despite this brief separation, it’s evident that the Cowboys value Flournoy’s contributions.

Background on Flournoy

A sixth-round draft pick out of Southeast Missouri State in the 2024 NFL Draft, Flournoy showcased his potential during his rookie season. He participated in 11 games, making one start, and recorded 10 receptions for 102 yards. His versatility as both a receiver and a special teams player makes him a valuable asset for Dallas.

Special Teams Impact

Flournoy’s impact is expected to be felt primarily on special teams, an area where he has garnered significant praise from head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Recently, Schottenheimer noted, “Over the past two or three weeks, I would say there’s been no one that has played special teams more dominant than Ryan Flournoy. As a gunner, he’s been unstoppable, and he’s done a really good job playing receiver with contested catches versus press release.”

This recognition highlights Flournoy’s ability to excel in high-pressure situations, making him an essential component of the Cowboys’ special teams strategy.

Offensive Opportunities

While Flournoy is likely to focus on special teams, his return could also stir competition for offensive snaps. With CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and KaVontae Turpin leading the receiving corps, Flournoy might find opportunities to challenge Jalen Tolbert for playing time.

The Cowboys and Giants will face off at AT&T Stadium this Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. As the Cowboys look to build momentum in their season, Flournoy’s presence could be a game-changer, providing both depth and a spark in crucial moments.
