Croskey-Merritt reflects on his success and the team’s victory

The Washington Commanders kicked off their season with a resounding 21-6 victory over the New York Giants, and rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt was at the forefront of the celebration. In his debut, Croskey-Merritt not only made a significant impact on the field but also etched his name into the team’s history with his first career touchdown.

Croskey-Merritt’s journey from a seventh-round draft pick out of Arizona to the end zone was nothing short of exhilarating. Following the game, he recounted the excitement of his debut, humorously admitting, “I forgot the ball again. I told myself, when I score, I’m going to make sure I keep my football. I think the excitement just takes over me, and I just end up dropping it. [WR] Terry [McLaurin] ended up finding the ball and giving it to me.”

The rookie’s performance was impressive; he led the Commanders with 10 carries for 82 yards, showcasing his potential as a dynamic playmaker. Croskey-Merritt expressed gratitude towards his teammates for their unwavering support throughout his journey. “This whole day was amazing, just being able to be on the field with my teammates. I’ve waited a long time for this, and I just want to give these guys thanks for just pushing me and believing in me,” he shared.

A bright future ahead

With his standout performance, Croskey-Merritt is poised to become one of the top rookie rushers in the league. The Commanders find themselves in a promising position as they prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football. This game presents a significant opportunity for Croskey-Merritt to showcase his skills on a national stage, particularly against one of the league’s toughest rush defenses.

When asked about his strategy for the next game, Croskey-Merritt kept it simple, saying, “I just go out there and do me. It’s football at the end of the day. I just go out there and have fun.” His approach reflects a refreshing perspective, focusing on enjoyment and authenticity as he navigates the challenges of his rookie season.

As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Croskey-Merritt to see if he can continue his momentum and solidify his role within the Commanders’ offense. With determination and the support of his teammates, the rookie running back is ready to make his mark in the NFL.
