Commanders eye $5M backfield boost with Jerome Ford trade to fill Ekeler’s void in playoff push

Commanders Seek $5M Boost with Jerome Ford Trade to Offset Ekeler’s Absence

The Washington Commanders are actively exploring options to bolster their backfield following the unfortunate injury to star running back Austin Ekeler. Ekeler’s torn Achilles will sideline him for the remainder of the season, leaving a significant void in the Commanders’ playoff aspirations.

Jerome Ford as a Potential Target

In light of this setback, analysts are suggesting that a trade for Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford could be a strategic move. Pro Football Network writer Tim Crean highlighted the Commanders as a potential suitor for Ford, who finds himself in a increasingly crowded backfield in Cleveland.

Crean noted, “The Browns’ backfield is quickly becoming one of the most crowded in the NFL.” With fourth-round pick Dylan Sampson already showing promise—logging 12 carries and eight receptions in Week 1—and undrafted rookie Raheim Sanders contributing the team’s sole rushing touchdown, Ford’s opportunities may be dwindling. The emergence of second-round pick Quinshon Judkins further complicates Ford’s standing, making him somewhat surplus to requirements in Cleveland.

The Current State of the Commanders’ Backfield

At present, the Commanders are leaning on rookie seventh-round pick Jacory Croskey-Merritt to lead their rushing attack, joined by Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. However, with Ekeler’s absence, it’s clear that more depth is needed. Ford, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, presents an enticing option for Washington. While he may not step in as an immediate starter, he could assume crucial first-team responsibilities if called upon.

Through the early stages of the season, Ford has managed 12 carries for 39 yards. While these numbers do not reflect his breakout performance from the previous year—where he tallied over 800 rushing yards for the Browns—his experience and skill set make him a valuable addition as the Commanders aim for a playoff berth.

The Road Ahead

As the Commanders look to solidify their roster amid the challenges posed by Ekeler’s injury, adding a player like Ford could provide the necessary boost. With the NFC playoff race heating up, Washington’s management will need to weigh the potential benefits of such a trade carefully. The landscape of the Commanders’ backfield may soon change as they seek to navigate the remainder of the season and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the Commanders continue to evaluate their options.
