Colts face defensive setback as DeForest Buckner sidelined for Falcons clash

The Indianapolis Colts are grappling with a significant injury blow ahead of their Week 10 showdown against the Atlanta Falcons in Berlin. The Colts will be without their defensive stalwart, DeForest Buckner, who has been ruled out due to a neck injury.

Buckner’s Impact on the Defense

As the Colts prepare to face the 7-2 Falcons, Buckner’s absence looms large. The defensive tackle has been a cornerstone of the Colts’ defense, ranking second on the team with 33 quarterback pressures this season. His contributions extend beyond just pressuring the quarterback; he leads the team with 24 tackles in run defense, and has amassed a total of 42 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, and four sacks. No other defensive lineman has logged more snaps than Buckner this season, underscoring his critical role in the Colts’ defensive scheme.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris acknowledged the challenge posed by Buckner’s absence. “DeForest Buckner’s a great player,” he noted. “Anytime you’re missing a player like that, obviously, it’s going to mean significant changes have to go into it. I’m sure they’ll be prepared to fill that role, but it definitely affects our game plan.”

Colts’ Defensive Rankings

The Colts’ defensive unit currently ranks 26th in the league, allowing 244.8 passing yards per game. However, they have managed to tally 26 sacks, placing them sixth in that category. The loss of Buckner could hinder their ability to contain the Falcons’ offense, especially given their struggles in the passing game.

Silver Lining: Sauce Gardner’s Return

In a twist of fortune for the Colts, cornerback Sauce Gardner is expected to make his debut after clearing concussion protocol. Gardner, acquired in a high-profile trade that saw the Colts send two first-round picks and Adonai Mitchell to the Jets, has the potential to significantly bolster the secondary.

Morris expressed his respect for Gardner’s talent, stating, “Sauce is a G, right? Don’t throw at the really good football player too much and find ways to beat him.” The matchup between Gardner and Falcons wide receiver Drake London is set to be a highlight for fans eager to see how the young cornerback adapts to his new team.

Game Day Outlook

As the Colts and Falcons gear up for their international clash, the stakes are high. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 AM in Berlin, and both teams will need to adjust their strategies in light of the injury news. The Colts will be looking to compensate for Buckner’s absence while hoping that Gardner’s return can spark a turnaround in their pass defense.
