Colts Add Veteran Depth with Ameer Abdullah Signing
The Indianapolis Colts made a strategic roster move on Monday, bringing in seasoned running back Ameer Abdullah to their practice squad while parting ways with Khalil Herbert. This decision reflects the team’s commitment to strengthening their depth at the position as they navigate the challenges of the season.
Ameer Abdullah’s Career Journey
Abdullah, a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, brings a wealth of experience to the Colts. Over his decade-long career, he has played in 141 games, showcasing his versatility and skill across multiple teams. After beginning his journey with the Detroit Lions, Abdullah has had tenures with the Minnesota Vikings and the Carolina Panthers, ultimately joining the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.
Last season with the Raiders, Abdullah demonstrated his capability by participating in 16 games, three of which he started. He accumulated 66 carries for 311 rushing yards and found the end zone twice. Additionally, Abdullah made significant contributions in the passing game, recording 40 receptions for 261 yards and three touchdowns, further emphasizing his dual-threat ability.
Khalil Herbert’s Departure
To accommodate Abdullah, the Colts made the decision to release Khalil Herbert from their practice squad after a six-month tenure in Indianapolis. Herbert’s time with the team was relatively brief, and this move underscores the Colts’ focus on optimizing their roster in pursuit of a successful season.
With Abdullah’s experience and Herbert’s exit, the Colts are looking to enhance their backfield options, hoping that Abdullah’s leadership and skill set can provide a valuable asset as they compete in the league.
