Cleveland’s QB conundrum: can Browns’ struggling offense support rookies or will Joe Flacco’s experience steady the ship?

Cleveland’s QB Conundrum

The Cleveland Browns are in the midst of a significant quarterback predicament, fielding two rookie quarterbacks while relying on the seasoned arm of 40-year-old Joe Flacco. As the team gears up for Week 3, head coach Kevin Stefanski remains steadfast in his decision not to alter the starting quarterback position. However, this decision reflects broader issues beyond the performance of rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

Offensive Struggles Plague the Browns

The root of the Browns’ struggles lies in their overall offensive talent, which has proven inadequate to support a successful quarterback transition. The offensive line and skill positions have struggled significantly, creating an environment fraught with challenges.

Daniel Oyefusi from ESPN underscores these issues, noting that the Browns’ offense is plagued by a nonexistent running game, ranking 26th in yards per carry. Additionally, they sit at 23rd in pass block win rate, which leaves quarterbacks exposed to pressure. The receiving corps has not done any favors either, tying for the league lead with five dropped passes.

Rookies in a Tough Spot

Given these circumstances, the Browns must tread carefully with their rookie quarterbacks. Neither Gabriel, selected at No. 94, nor Sanders, picked at No. 144, was drafted with the expectation that they would start right away. The coaching staff recognizes that throwing them into the current situation without substantial support could set them up for immediate failure.

While it’s almost certain that one or both rookies will start before the season concludes, the coaching staff will likely seek a more manageable matchup than the upcoming game against the formidable Packers defense. The intensity of facing such a strong opponent could further complicate matters for any rookie stepping onto the field for their first NFL start.

A Cautious Approach Ahead

The Browns find themselves in a precarious position as they navigate the complexities of their quarterback situation. With Flacco at the helm for now, the franchise is tasked with finding a way to bolster the overall offensive performance. Until then, the rookies remain on the sidelines, waiting for an opportunity that could define their careers in the league. The clock is ticking, and the pressure is mounting—Cleveland’s decision-making could determine the trajectory of its young quarterbacks for years to come.
