Cleveland Browns stun Steelers but jeopardize top draft pick as Shedeur Sanders shines

Cleveland Browns Upset Steelers Yet Complicate Draft Prospects as Shedeur Sanders Shines

The Cleveland Browns achieved a surprising 13-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17, a game that resonated deeply with the franchise’s passionate fanbase. While the win has ignited joy among supporters, it also raises questions about the implications for the upcoming NFL Draft, as many fans lamented the potential loss of a chance at the No. 1 overall selection.

Shedeur Sanders Impresses in Key Victory

Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders had a standout performance, completing 17 of 23 passes for 206 yards and one touchdown, albeit with two interceptions. His leadership in the first quarter provided the Browns with an early advantage that they maintained throughout the game. Coach Kevin Stefanski expressed pride in Sanders’ achievement, stating, “He got a win, so that’s great for the young man. He gets to beat Pittsburgh, a division rival. Wins in this division are never easy.”

Despite the win, the Browns’ offense struggled to find its rhythm in the second half, highlighting the need for improvement as they look ahead. This victory, however, shifted the Browns’ draft position significantly, dropping them from the No. 2 spot to No. 6 overall. With only four wins this season, it’s evident that the Browns must fortify their offense moving forward.

Draft Implications for the Browns

As the draft approaches, the Browns face a precarious situation. If the draft were to occur before the Week 18 matchups, the sixth overall pick might be too low to secure a top quarterback like Fernando Mendoza or Dante Moore. Teams such as the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals are all in the market for a new signal-caller, potentially pushing the Browns further down the list.

Fortunately, Cleveland possesses an additional first-round pick from their trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which could be pivotal if they aim to trade up for a quarterback. A successful campaign for Sanders may have altered their priorities, making it feasible to address more pressing needs, such as bolstering their offensive line or wide receiver corps.

Potential Targets with the No. 6 Pick

With the sixth overall selection, the Browns could target offensive tackle Caleb Lomu from Utah to enhance protection for Sanders. Alternatively, they might make a bold move to acquire a dynamic wide receiver, with options like Carnell Tate from Ohio State or Jordyn Tyson from Arizona State available.

Quarterback Future Uncertain

Even if the Browns opt not to draft a quarterback, the competition for the starting role is likely to intensify. Rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel remains on the roster, and while there have been discussions around releasing Deshaun Watson, indications suggest he will remain with the team through 2026, once fully recovered.

Furthermore, the Browns might explore trade opportunities for seasoned quarterbacks such as Kirk Cousins, Malik Willis from the Green Bay Packers, or Mac Jones of the San Francisco 49ers to add depth to their quarterback room.

Looking Ahead

As the offseason approaches, the Browns face pivotal decisions regarding their coaching staff, particularly concerning head coach Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Sanders has made notable strides under Rees, yet a change in leadership could lead to a shift in player evaluation, potentially resulting in a trade for Sanders.

With one final opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 18, Sanders has positioned himself as a key figure in the Browns’ future, forcing the franchise into a series of challenging decisions this offseason.
