Cleveland Browns eye blockbuster trade to secure Fernando Mendoza as franchise quarterback

Cleveland Browns pursue potential trade for Fernando Mendoza as future quarterback

The Cleveland Browns find themselves at a crucial crossroads in their search for a franchise quarterback. Since their return to the NFL in 1999, the team has grappled with finding a long-term solution under center. While current starter Shedeur Sanders has expressed confidence in his ability to be the answer, some analysts remain skeptical about his potential.

Draft Strategy and Trade Projections

In the latest mock draft from a leading NFL analyst, the Browns are projected to make a bold move by trading up to the No. 1 overall pick to secure Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. According to Dane Brugler, the Browns would need to part with their additional first-round pick acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars, along with their own first-round selection, to make this leap.

As it stands, if the NFL Draft were to occur before Week 14, Cleveland would hold the No. 5 overall pick, a position that may not be high enough to land Mendoza. Several teams in front of them, including the New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders, are also in the hunt for a quarterback, further complicating the Browns’ aspirations.

Assessing Current Roster Needs

The Browns gained an extra first-round pick during April’s draft by opting not to select Heisman-winning dual-threat star Travis Hunter. Instead, they moved back three spots to pick Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham at No. 5 while also acquiring additional selections in later rounds, which included running back Quinshon Judkins.

However, the prospect of trading away a future first-round selection, particularly in 2026, raises eyebrows among fans. The Browns have pressing needs beyond just the quarterback position. Their offensive line is on the verge of free agency, and their wide receiver corps has been rated among the weakest in the league.

The Mendoza Factor

Despite the team’s various needs, acquiring Mendoza could prove pivotal in finally ending the quarterback search. The 22-year-old is currently in the midst of a standout Heisman campaign, having thrown 32 touchdowns against just five interceptions in his inaugural season with the Hoosiers after transferring from California. With his performance, he has positioned himself as a strong candidate to be one of the first players selected in the upcoming draft.

Cleveland’s decision to forgo a generational talent like Hunter in favor of acquiring an additional first-round pick signals their long-term thinking. While the Browns view third-round pick Dillon Gabriel as a promising project quarterback and believe they found value in Sanders, neither player appears to be the definitive answer for the franchise’s future.

As the Browns contemplate this potential trade, the stakes are high. Securing Mendoza could not only stabilize the quarterback position but also reshape the trajectory of the franchise for years to come.
